What is your experience with Brownell's mags, specifically ones with CS springs and green follower? How much of an upgrade are they over GI mags with dark gray followers? Thanks is advance.

I've had several here for a couple years, I'd go with them anytime.
Last military mags I used were the property of Uncle Sam & I had no choice. :)

ML,
If you're talking to me, PMags did not exist & neither did any of the current followers.
I had no choice whatever about using the issued mags, and as they came. There were no alternatives.

IMO: The whole follower tipping thing with GI 30-round mags is much over-blown anyway.

The initial problem was confined to full-auto fire with M-16's.

I doubt you can pull an AR-15 trigger fast enough to get the vibration necessary to cause a old GI follower to tilt on you.
I haven't been able to since 1970.

As for grey followers?

They might be Magpul followers.
Thats what color they used to be when I bought mine several years ago.

The only way to tell is take the mag apart and look at them.

I never even SAW a 30-rounder till long after I got out of the AF. :)
And we were using M-16s, none of those A1s for us.

I have used their 20 rounders for years. Never had an issue with the 30 rounders, but just prefer the size/weight of the 20 rounders for the ranch rifle.

I was issued brownells mags in Afghanistan. Didn't have any issues with them, they were the same as all other milspec mags.

Another vote of confidence for Brownell's mags. No functional difference between it and my Colt mags, and at half the price.

I did not realize the US military uses Brownell's mags too. Good to know!

Another vote for Brownell's magazines. I specifically ordered the CS springs. No problems whatsoever. I shoot mainly 20 round mags because they fit better when you're bench shooting at the range.

Brownell's mag have a good reputation but were I to buy new USGI-type mags I would order them with MagPul followers. They are a great improvement over the GI green follower, all else being equal.

I heard that the Government owns the tooling that is used to manufacture the magazines that they contract for and that the successful bidder gets the use of that tooling. Is that true and if so, can the bidder use that tooling to produce magazines that are to be sold on the open market?

They are a great improvement over the GI green follower, all else being equal.
How are they a great improvement over the green GI follower??

The green GI follower is an anti-tilt design made to fix the old black GI follower that could tilt on full-auto fire.

It did.

And I have never had one single problem with the old black GI followers in 40+ years of AR-15's in the first place.

It was an M-16 thing in the first place.
If you don't have a buzz-gun set on full-auto, the vibrations in the mag aren't there to cause the tilt.

I got a couple that I use as range mags, and another 40 sitting the wrapper.

It's a no frills mag that works like it is supposed to. I like it plenty.

You can, or at least could, order Brownells magazines with Magpul followers and Ranger pads if you want them.
The Brownells USGI magazines use the new Mil-Spec tan follower which is similar but not the same as the Magpul follower.
