I am a 1911 guy. It's 45ACP for me. I've been plinking most of my life, but only assumed the responsibility of firearms ownership just five years ago. I've two examples now of this finest handgun design, both "clones", but that's ok by me; they're both excellent pistols: A Springfield "Loaded" parkerized and a Kimber Ultra CDP II.

I also enjoy my rifles, from .308 through 7.62 short to .22LR in a Winchester Model 63. Now I'd like a pistol chambered the same. I've ever really been interested in a full-size 1911 chambered in .22... but this new (introduced 3 years ago) Browning 1911-22 has my name written all over it.

Pictured above is the Browning 1911-22 Compact next to a Colt Commander belonging to my local gun store. I will eventually have examples of both barrel lengths offered by Browning in this pistol (3-5/8" for Compact and 4-1/4" for the 1911A1) but for now I've "jailed" the Compact. I'm excited to say it comes home this week. The several YouTube videos on the subject reveal that once one starts shooting it, it's hard to put down because it's so much fun to shoot. Good thing I have some .22LR in the safe.

Yes, the sights are scaled-down G.I. sights, so there's room for improvement there. I see elsewhere that a quick fix is to apply a drop of high-visibility white to the front sight post. Dunno about the trigger yet, but if Mr. Eick is to be believed (and he is), I won't be entirely happy until that's smoothed over.

As the late, great Colonel Jeff Cooper has been known to say, "All one needs in a 1911 are sights that you can see and a trigger that you can manage...."

:)

I got to fondle one of those today.. It was love at first sight!
May have to add it to the collection one day.

I love the little scaled down 1911 .22's and I really like your antique Coleman stuff. Boy, a Coleman GPA and gun addiction, you have it bad:)

I agree about how a full size 1911 in .22LR doesn't really hold much interest to me but this scaled down Browning 1911-22 does fascinate me. Like the 1911-22 A1 and the 1911-22 A1 Black Label laminate polymer frame models.

I like mine. I took a magnifying glass, a tooth pick, and some white paint and carefully made a dot on the front sight and a two dots on the rear. Even so, I still think I am mostly just aiming down the barrel. I love the little gun, my friend at work, it is his step father that is one of the top dogs at the facility that builds all the 22 pistols for Browning.

Here is an example of an average shooter firing the Browning 1911-22

I had a 1911-22 for awhile. loved it as well. Gave up eventually and filed the rear slot slightly larger to make the sight picture a little better. that, and white paint on the front sight helped tremendously.

Eventually I traded it in on a Smith K38, but I hear that browning improved the model now, it's a polymer frame, but appears to have a different sight.

It was love at first sight!

lol. Yep! Me too. I saw both of them sitting in the display case at a sporting goods chain store and after a closer look I knew then that it was only a matter of when, and not if.

Good news comes down but not in enough time for you
Awesome purchase!

Thanks to another southern Californian! Hah, yes; the day I picked this up (yesterday the 25th) was the day that the 10-day-waiting period for 2nd-time firearms buyers was ruled unconstitutional by a California court. Of course, we must now wait 180 days for the ruling to take effect...

Thanks again for the good word. Now I have to wait 'til Thursday after work before I get to shoot this lil' thing! but at least it's home and in the safe.

I love the little scaled down 1911 .22's.

Boy, a Coleman GPA and gun addiction, you have it bad :)

Are you...? Do you...? Not many folks know to refer to these as GPA's.

Thank you, and on the contrary, my good man. I have it good. Hee!

:)

I agree about how a full size 1911 in .22LR doesn't really hold much interest to me but this scaled down Browning 1911-22 does fascinate me.

What is it about these things? Is it that they're reasonably well-made for what they are? and that it's the perfect size reduction to compliment a .22LR? Browning has alluded to that very fact; that they spent some time in development to discover what was the ideal size: an 85% scale G.I. replica pistol...

Browning

John M. Browning developed the Model 1911 to fire the powerful 45 ACP cartridge. We developed it to fire the 22 L.R. and, after extensive testing and research, determined that 85% of the original size was ideal for the smaller cartridge.

I love the platform and the little browning compact is a 'must have' for me now.

Indeed! ...and there's never a bad time to come around to the 1911 design. It is meant to be. Looking forward to seeing what you acquire in the future, sir. Please keep us posted.

Not a bad group for an "average" shooter... and thanks for the tip on highlighting the front sight post. I'd read that elsewhere, too.

The little Browning is one of my favorite guns. I think you'll really enjoy it.

Thank you very much for your reply. That this is one of your favorite guns is always good to hear! I'm really looking forward to sending a bunch of rounds downrange.

I hear that browning improved the model now, it's a polymer frame, but appears to have a different sight.

Check my link posted in reply above... you'll see that one of the polymer-framed models does appear to have a Novak-style rear sight. It'd be nice if it fit the dovetail on the metal-framed Compact and A1 versions...

Thanks again for the replies, gentlemen.

:)

I love 1911's and was excited to handle that down-sized beauty when they first came out. Definitely on my list to get someday. I have a GPA collection, 9 lanterns and a stove, but not nearly as nice as yours, I grab 'em when I can get them cheap. Something else to tinker with. Keep up the good fight out there in Socal!

Browning 1911 in .22

Looks a lot like the old Llama .22's (&.32,.380's, et al) which were crappy as far as to reliability.

I'm sure the Browning .22 1911 is a vast improvement over the Llama (R.I.P.).

My browning ate literally everything I threw at it. only 22 pistol I've owned that did not have jam of some kind at least once.

Have three 10-rd mags. Dumped two in the body and one in the head on this paper placed 7 yards out. I shot a total of near 200 rds. This was the cleanest target. I also ran a few rounds through an old Jennings. Gah. That trigger...

1. Need some hi-viz white paint on the front sight
2. Range lane poorly lighted - hard to see much on the top of the slide (camera flash makes it seem like there's light)
3. Looking through a floater in my old eye - like trying to blink away a piece of sleep that won't go away...

Sheesh! Now that I put it that way... I was shooting blind! Hey! that's not bad at all, then. Hee.

All in all, this is a fun little pistol! With better sights, it'd be really fun!

:)

Unidentified .22 Auto

Last picture, I know the Browning 1911 .22 is on the right. Please identify la pistola on the left. Jennings .22 ? All looks like fun. Thanks:)

.
Hey, how're you doin.

Yes, that's an unknown-vintage ('80's?) J-22. The trigger! weighs a ton...

Granted, there're a few simple things one can do to smooth it out but short of swapping springs... the trigger is just far too heavy.

The Browning, on the other hand... well, it feels like a 10 X better gun. It should be, when one compares the purchase price for both!

Hee.
