My FIL left me a Browning 270. A friend would love to have a 270 and has a Win 30-30. I have a Rem 30-06 so don't need the 270.

Everything else equal, is this a reasonable trade? I don't want either of us feeling ripped off in the end, but I think both of us would be happy with the trade...

Need to know specific models and conditions to make any kind of guess. Also, used gun prices can vary considerably from state to state.

Edit to add: if both of you are happy with the trade I wouldn't get too bogged down with the market value of the guns in question.

All Winchester 30-30's are not created equal. A pre-64 version from the 50's could be a $500 rifle, while a 1982 version could be a $350 rifle. But if both parties are happy, its a fair deal in my book.

Is your Browning a bolt action, lever, or semi-auto. Regardless of how you answer this question, IMO there is no way I would trade a decent Browning for a Winchester 30.30, especially if yours is a BLR or BAR--no way!

NO WAY!!!! 1st of all if it was left to you I'm going to assume he past away. This is a possesion now in it's 2nd generation and the potential to become a heirloom to future generations. Secondly, owning a .270 & 06 isn't all that bad an idea regardless of the proximity to performance. Thirdly, you'd be coming out on the short end of the stick merely by comparing the value of a Browning Vs a 30-30 not only by name brand but by calliber. Do what you want. This is my opinion.

As said above it kind of depends on the models.
However, as a general rule of thumb, unless it's a pre 64, I don't think it's a good deal. I see Winchester 30-30's for $280-350 quite often that are post 64. There is one for $280 on a local classifieds site now. I see them fairly often for $300.

Most of your basic Browning Abolts should bring $450-500, most of the BAR's Grade 1's should bring $550-750, and most of the BLR Grade 1's somewhere in that range. Obviously higher grades will bring more.

Let us know which model Browning you have and we could give you a more accurate assessment.

Since it was passed down however, I'd be inclined to keep it too. Or at least offer it to the rest of your family first in case any of them want it. If you do have to trade with your buddy, I'd think his rifle plus a couple hundred bucks minimum would be more the trade that should be made.

The gun is still south of here so I can't give you model info:
It is a Browning bolt action. If I were to guess it is a 'good' Browning.

I have the 30-06 and was under the impression that anything I'd want with the 270 I could take with the -06...so didn't need it.???

On the other hand, which ever son (of mine) gets the -06 the other could get the 270...

You all have answered my basic question though, all else being equal the Browning is 'worth' more than the 30-30.

Thanks.

His rifle and $200 would even it out more. Especially if there is a Scope on the Bolt action, even more if its a well known brand such as Leupold. Personally I'd pass the offer by. Anything, especially guns, given to me by a passed love one has a home until I pass.
