Hi,

Sometimes when firing my Browning A5 3" magnum, my trigger hand seems to get 'smacked' by the trigger/trigger guard. Painful!

Is this due to heavy recoil plus badly set friction rings?

Any other ideas?

(I don't want to start wearing gloves!)

trigger guard smack

Are you getting smacked on your middle finger knuckle? I suspect the length of pull on the stock might be a bit too short. Just a guess.

Salmoeye beat me to it

Try holding on to it, this is a man's gun and not a sissy I am gonna limp wrist ya gun.

I have never gotten a bruise or as much as a soar shoulder shooting an A5 that the friction pieces were properly set up.

I read a lot about finger bruising with Benelli, recently with the Versamax and now with the A5, and yet I have never had it happen to me.

A "soft" grip causes exactly what you are experiencing allowing the gun to slide back and be stopped by your fingers.

It is possible the LOP is wrong, too short and not getting it set or too long allowing it to slide out off the shoulder.

Hmm - maybe I am holding the gun too loosely at times.

Hard to tell when shooting in cold rain wearing vest, shirt, jumper, another jumper and then a padded parka jacket!

(vest = undershirt; jumper = sweater/pullover .. dunno if those are US words too)

I have noticed that with my Remington M11 16GA as well, but I dont get bruises. seems like the trigger is yanked away after the shot is fired. But its the only gun I have i can shoot trap in the 20's with!

knuckle busting

I have the same problem with an AYA 53, 20 gauge, SxS, with double triggers.
I don't think its a problems with holding the gun tightly. It's more with the fit and LOP. I bought a small rubber trigger guard piece that fits over the back of the trigger guard and acts as a cushion from Galazan (connecticutt shotgun manufacturing) that solved the problem.

This happens more frequently to me at least with a "long recoil" action like the A5, Franchi AL48 and Remington 11. It is among the many reasons I loathe the Auto 5.

Holding tighter helps but a gun design that requires I hold it like I'm strangling isn't worth the bother when there are more advanced and superior designs on the market.

Highgate, it sounds to me like the LOP is way to long with the extra clothing you are wearing. I would try getting someone to check your fit.

The gun doesn't require it to be "strangled" but it does require a good fit and then they are a dream to shoot
