i tell ya buck makes a great knife ,the tactical knives are great i been thinking of the buck nighthawk black oxide coated steel blade and reinforced nylon grip check it out at www.buckknives.com
Question: Do they now use the type of steele that you can sharpen? I know I have one that was purchased several years ago and you CANNOT sharpen it at all. I love the knife but when it gets dull, might as well open a can of Campbell's with it.
I don't own any of their tactical knives, but if I was in the market for one, I would look closely at what they have. Buck has made lots of knives, tactical and otherwise, under contract for other companies. They were the original manufacturer of Cold Steel's tanto, for example. They know how to make knives.
I have a Buck Special 119 that Ipicked up for 39.95 at wal-mart. Great knife, lifted hair right out od the box. It's sharp, not TOO big, light enough for long work but weighty enough to give confidence. The finish is nice, and you can't beat it at that price.
I have a Nighthawk tanto and for my money, that Nighthawk grip is one of the most comfortable and handy that I have ever felt
My only gripe is the cheesy scabbard
As some you guys know I work @ WALLY-WORLD........When I saw that knife come in, I was some what imppressed with it........but I could do without the black coating and the addition of the serration. I bought the predecessor while in the Army about 15 years ago with a standard satin blasted blade and an all black handle. I have to say that I have abused it negeclted it for months at a time.......and it even survived my knife throwing phase..........but the blade and handle has held up well and would have not a problem taking it in to the bush. Though I do have a ( a real )K-Bar ....they both get duty as the situation arises.
I would have bought the 119 special......butttt they changed from that nice leather sheath to the (IMO) crappy nylon sheath...........boot Knives need a nice black leather sheath
And on side note more and more of the Gerber, Buck, Winchester knives are coming from Taiwan, at least the ones we get at my store. store 1385 Gastonia,NC
But know am a kersaw man....I have all the assisted open knives that we sell at my store
On impulse, I bought a Buck "rush" last week at wally world (~$45) seems like a solid knife (left in pic). I'm spoiled on assisted opening knives...been carrying a Kershaw leek for a couple years, also have a Kershaw Bump as a barbeque knife (is there such a thing?)
My Bucks that are 420HC (119 and 110) sharpen up very nicely. I just ran the 119 over my Spyderco Sharpmaker the other day and it cuts better than new now.
I agree with puppy the ATS 34 odessey is a great knife, wish it was still available, i am constantly looking for another one or two. My EDC too for a long time.
