Does THR have any past or current members who would give me their impressions and experiences with BCGC? Feel free to pm me. I think there may have been an informal invitation from a member back when Susan was battling her heart condition (btw, the fix is still holding - she's fine), and I couldn't follow up.

I realize the range is for high-power rifle, and I'm a blonde with a .45 looking for a corner out there to practice defensive drills, but it's all that's within my commuting range these days (and right on the way to Wellington Lake, where we enjoy canoeing & fishing) that fills the requirements of being a controlled range and not just an informal 'shooting permitted' plinking area.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not a member of BCGC, but I did attend some of thier High Power classes about 2 years ago.

The range is a beautiful rifle range. Very well built and maintained. They seem to have a very busy schedule during the summer weekends with matches and stuff.

I had considered joining them a while back, but when I saw their range was primarily for rifle, and busy on the weekends, I didn't feel it lent itself easily to exercising the urge to go out and plink with a handgun from time to time.

All that being said, great group of folks up there.

Just my $0.02.

I shoot High Power up there 2-3 times a year and have for the last 8 years and have not seen any developed ranges for handgun. SASS used to have shoots up there but stopped, I believe, when it was established that some of their venues had rounds impacting off BCGC property. I'm almost positive their only range is the 600yd High Power range which is also set up to accommodate rimfire shilouette.
As YCI states, their schedule is pretty busy on the weekends in summer (and you can't get in there in the winter) so, unless you can get off to shoot during the week, BCGC may not be what you're looking for.

:)

Yep, it's lovely country up here. . .

Thanks for the replies! As I understand it, currently, pistol is allowed in the impact area behind the target pit (though determining downrange safety will be something I really investigate, thanks).

I spoke with (I think his name was) Mr. Beach yesterday afternoon, and his take was that BCGC was hoping to have small-bore rifle (rimfire) and pistol on a dedicated 100 yard range completed by the end of next year. As it was a protracted phone call, I wasn't able to remember more than the gist with a few details.

He did emphasize the acute club concerns that there be absolutely no incidental 'out-of-bounds' lateral impacts of any kind, to any degree - the Forest Service views that as cause to close the club (spent bullets in trees - whole lotta bad, no excuse).

I have hopes this can work out. Dumont is just too far for me to drive, and going into the flats and the greater metro area combines the opportunity for asthma to flare up on top of exposure to even more pre-Darwinization minded drivers.

On that note, should anyone who has clout in NRA and/or Colorado government, even our county sheriff has reiterated that there's a real need for this side of Park County to have a secure and at least modestly developed 100 yard rifle/pistol range (even LEO's in this area have sizeable commutes to practice; and yes, our local sworn actually do go out of their way to train in firearms).

Trisha, I have moved, but I was a member if BCGC for years and it is my "home" range. The range rules have always allowed handgun shooting toward the berm (between the pits and the berm) but only when there isn't a match or practice, which basically means you can't use the range on the weekends during the summer.

Steve, as I live (quite literally) just down the road and over the hill from the intersection (between heading to the range vs heading to Wellington Lake), my interest is towards shooting in peace during the week.

Susan wants to check out the range during a busy weekend just to get a feel for the membership overall.

Thanks!

Trisha

Hi Trisha - only dropped in to say Hi - and hope Susan is doing good these days.

Your mention of shooting in peace is my proclivity entirely - nothing like a nice quiet range :)

BTW - no sweat re the triple tap - have deleted the ''spares'' :D

I will be heading to the range friday mourning. We do suggest seeing the range before joining.
I believe you will be happy as a member. We have a small membership with under 200 folks. Most of them only go a few times a year or for matches.

During the week even in the summer you most likely will not see anyone.
I will put it this way. Most all matches are run on sundays and just a few folks go up to practice on sat. This sat is a colorado state team practice with nothing going on sun. During the summer months you can figure around 2 weekends a month to be occupied at the range. July is about the most busy month with something most every weekend.

From november till april the range is hardly ever used. We have a sign in at the range before you use it and for the month of april I think I only saw around 25 folks that went the whole month besides the match last sunday.

If you want you can have this choice. I open the gate when I roll in on friday for folks coming in from out of town. It would be safe to show up after like noon and the lock will be off the gate. You are welcome to drive in and look around. it will be open till like mid afternoon on sat.
if you do not know how to get to the range I can meet you in Bailey and you can follow me in.
If you wish to do this you can contact me by email.

I go to the range from time to time. All the info you got is true. We are a nice group of people. It sounds like we are neighbors. Ever eat at the Cut Throat?
I go up to Harris Park early on the week ends before it starts to get crowded.
that way I can practice defense shooting. I always take out my trash. Some don't.

I ate there the sat before last for breakfast. I do like the half order of the breakfast with the hash browns with one piece of ham, bacon and sausage.
some good food at a great price.
