I need to do a presentation on survival kits, and I am in need of a list of items you would put in that kit, and everything you would have with you that could be carried by a single person.

The 72 Hour Extreme Bug Out Kit (1 Man)
Permanently leave the following in a 4X4 Truck or equivalent

Communication

Shotgun
Pump-action Remington 870P, or equal, w/ standard stock- mounted, locked, unloaded in cab

Sidearm
.40 S&W Glock- in Range Bag, locked, unloaded in cab w/ high cap mags

Ammunition
.223rem, 12ga buck & slug, .40. Most folks will carry about 200-300 rounds on their combat load, you should have at least 3-5 unloaded magazines per weapon in your 72 hour kit in a locked ammo can.

Weapons Cleaning Gear
basic on lbe or alice pack. Advanced in plastic container

Fluids
2-5 gal. gas containers w fuel and other fluids

Water
Camel Back on alice pack and 5 gal distilled bottle in plastic container

Night Vision Equipment
3rd generation technology. Rifle scope and goggles

Water
3- 5 gal distilled water

Lock and Load- Grab and GO!

Your thread says bug-out-bag, but your post says survival bag. I've considered them two separate things.

I belong to the LDS Church, where members are counseled to have a "72-hour kit", which is basically the same thing.

-Meals for 3 days (nothing fancy--survival fare. But its not hard to do bettter than that)
-Water--1 gal/person/day for 3 days. I consider a hiker's purifier pump a mandatory addition.
-Sleeping arrangments. Sleeping bag w/ pad is fine.
-Tent: anything from a tube tent to a nylon "condo".
-Toiletries as you see fit.
-Firearms as you see fit. That's another whole thread (or 10). I consider my CCW as minimum.

The whole thing fits in a backpack per person, except the water. In fact, its mighty similar to a hiking load for a long weekend. (Which is a great test of your kit's components).

I think of a survival kit as an "anywhere kit", which must fit in a fanny pack, and must be taken any time I am more than few miles from a well-traveled road. It is based on the things that will kill you fastest in a survival situation: hypothermia, and thirst. Mine contains:

-Space blanket
-Fire starting gear
-Resealable sandwich baggies (for canteen purposes)
-Water purification pills
-Steel mirror and whistle for signalling
-Compass. May ditch this. In most survival situations, staying put is the best option.
-One aqua block or equiv (I leave this out if I am going to a river).
-CCW.

Thank you. That is very good. However, I'm going to be giving this to a group of people that are borderline sheeple. I will make the mention of a reccomendation of some sort of firearms, but I believe I will omit the night vision, body armor, etc. This is more for a local natural disaster (earthquake, flood, tornado), hold-you-over-for-48-hours-till-red-cross-comes type scenario, not complete anarchy, break down of civil order type of thing.

Sorry, I live in Southern California and put that together to get me to Arizonain a all hell breaks loose situation. :D

Sheeple....all they need is a cellphone with speed-dial 911 and a gum ball for the wait.

Ex-Doc, you are a true survivalist. I hope to someday have the funds necessary to get the equipment you have.

...hold-you-over-for-48-hours-till-red-cross-comes type scenario, not complete anarchy, break down of civil order type of thing.

I believe the accronym you are looking for is TEOTWAWKI

The End Of The World As We Know It.

Man, Doc has everything covered. I think I'll copy that to use for a reference. Only one thing forgotten, two (2) fifths of Jack Daniels for antiseptic cleansing of wounds and its painkillin' properties. :D
Otherwise very concise list !

Bug out on a budget, or, what I am hoping to put together in the next couple of months:
1) Camelback water carrier
2) PURE Hiker (or preferably Katadyn Combi) water filtration system
3) Canteen, cover, and metal canteen cup
4) Survival meal tabs, 15 days worth
5) Windproof, water proof matches (usually wooden matched dipped in parafin) or lighter
6) Emergency thermal blanket
7) A good compass (Silva or Suunto)
8) Military issue shelter half poncho
9) E-tool
10) Swiss Army Knife (Victorinox Tinker is my favorite)
11) K-bar or Buck hunting knife ( or maybe even a REALLY good hatchet. I am leaning more toward the latter)
12) First aid kit, the military kit seems to fit the bill fine.
13) Povidone Iodine (for antiseptic AND water purification)
14) Ok the gun issue. My own logic moves me toward the Savage or EAA rifle/shotgun combo because of the inherent utility for both defense and food procurement. I like the Savage Turkey in .223/12 gauge.
15) One of those camping multi-packs of seasonings (salt, pepper, paprika, etc) because those varmints are gonna need some flavor!
16) Some sort of improvised fishing kit with line, weights, and hooks. I guess that depends on your location.

Theorizing like this is always a lot of fun! :D

Lighters are always better than matches, and cheaper. I have several types of "strike anywhere" matches and you can't strike them anywhere other than the sandpaper they come with. The one is supposed to be NATO issue....and would you believe they suck horribly?!

A child-proof lighter (one that locks) is excellent and free for the most part. Throw a handfull of them in your kit and you'll have plenty of fire potential.

If you're planning on being out for some time and need to start a fire, take some candles with you. A 1" piece of candle will start a fire even if the wood is wet and will sustain a flame in high winds. A sixpack of 6" emergency candles will last you about two years if you use them up properly.

Water: I really like the Safe Water Anywhere filter for simplicity. With a couple of spare filters, you could be drinking for a long time. It's better to have a good filter than to tote several gallons of water with you.

Sleeping blankets are great, but surplus is too bulky/heavy and you should spend the bucks on a quality camping bag. Space blankets are irreplaceable..gota have two.

Knife ----- at least one fixed blade and one leatherman Supertool.

Ammo for the rifle doesn't need to be more than 100rnd. The pistol (a .22) should have 500rnd because they are great for procurring food. The defensive pistol (.357/.40/.45) should have 500rnd because you just don't know how much defensiveing you'll need to do. Spare mags and a cleaning kit are a good thing to have but I'd load up on more mags before worrying about the cleaning gear. A dirty gun will shoot a bunch before it binds up. Good lube and a rag will see you a long way.

Doc, I barely recognize some of the medic bag list you posted, much less know the where and when of application or administration. :D This gives new respect and meaning to the phrase MEDIC !!!!!. Next time I go on extended leave I need to just take one with me ( medic ) ....:D

Ex-Doc, I couldn't help but notice the incredibly large amount of cardiac drugs you have so I have a few questions and comments.

First of all I see you have Atropine listed 3 times. I assume one of those listings is a multi-dose vial? Also if youre auto injectors are only 2mg I hope you have a lot of them cause 2mg just aint gonna cut it if youre planning on using the Atropine for a nerve agent antidote. Further more, if youre planning on using the Atropine for acute Bradycardia you had better plan on having a monitor preferably a LP-12 to check rythyms. Also, why all the cardiac drugs? are you planning on working a full arrest on the way to A.Z.? BTW I thought Verapemill was dropped from the American heart ???. list of front line cardiac drugs? I know We don't carry it anymore.

Also is youre Dopamine pre-mixed? I sure would hate to figure out a drip under fire! Also what would you use the Dope for except for cardiogenic shock or long term maintenance of a stable rythym in a cardiac PT.?

Also back to the monitor. As I'm sure you know in cases of severe tachycardia the use of Adenosine/adenocard will cause a sudden short period of Asystole prior to successful cardiversion{we hope!} and you will DEFINITLEY need a monitor for the administration of this drug.

Also, where do you keep youre frontline I.V. startkit and what types of fluids do you carry?

Just curious. thanks.

sorry about the spelling. the last line in the 2nd paragraph is American Heart Association.

And by "we dont carry it anymore" I mean my departments protocols and our Medical directors standing orders have ommitted it from use.

Ah, after re-reading youre post I see that you do have N.S.

are those 500ml? 1000? or just flush?

BTW, you will also need O2 and albuterol plus various airway adjuncts. You do have a Combi-tube dont you? I know scoring a tube can be pretty tough in less than ideal conditions! :-}

Also, they are working on a C.T. that you can put drugs through, that will be a gods-send for all the times when you cant get a line or secure an E.J. for I.V. administered drugs!

Later.

"they are working on a C.T. that you can put drugs through"

Very cool......real quickly though the list above is what I had....some has expired and sense I am no longer ATLS or ACLS (for a few years now) I have dedicated my time to keeping my standard Combat Field Medical skills fresh, probably answers your ? about cuurent ACLS med protocols. In all likelyhood it will all be moot(or expectant) when it's really needed. I no longer have a defib but and AED would be a nice to have at the minimum. Notice I'm an EX-Doc so access to anything beyond basic supplies, IV solutions, and Class II narcotics is becoming hard to come by. Some items I have like below don't necessarily expire:

Equipment and supplies for establishing and maintaining a patient airway at the advanced life support level (to include OP and NG airways; ET tubes, styletes, blades, and handles; portable suction devices and catheters; and stethoscopes for monitoring breath sounds)
IV Administration Sets (Macro and Micro)
IV Catheters (14, 16, 18, 20, and 22 gauge)
IV Catheters (Butterfly 22, 24, 26 gauge)
Eye Lense for Lavage or Continuous Medication
Nasogastric Tubes
Oxygen administration equipment and supplies (including bag valve masks; rebreather and non-rebreather masks, and nasal cannulas; oxygen cylinders(Portable), regulators, tubing)
Syringes (3cc and 10cc)
26 ga. ½†needles
21 ga. 1 ½†needles
Suture Kit

OH and most of all Duct tape, tongue depressors, and lots of vaseline!

Also I have 500 & 1000ml ringers and NS which luckily haven't expired yet (infusers too) I do have a CombiTube kit (37 & 41 fr) and a ETCO2 detector.

Dopamine(200mg) was premixed in 5% dextrose 250ml....before it expired...

Doc, Grab some nasal canullas and a macro drip set and a 1000cc N.S. and use the N.C. to irrigate the eyes. This is a fairly old trick of the trade so you might already know it but here goes:
You place the N.C. with the nasal prongs spread over the bridge of the nose so that the saline flushes the the eyes. Just connect your IV line to the NC and you can use the drip rate to set the force of the flow or have youre PT do it himself!

Speaking of drip sets just get a select3. It's macro and micro in one dial adjusted unit.

Sorry if you already know this stuff. Just trying to teach an old dog new tricks! ;_}

Here's some of the other basics I have in small quantities (still need to get a few items): FYI the "1ST AID CARE BOOKLET" is just in case I'm the patient! Don't leave it out!

Here's the "Official" US Army Combat Medic System:

The Combat Medic Vest System

The Combat Medic Vest System (CMVS) is a one-size fits all vest with detachable pockets and a resupply bag. The vest will hold 40% of the components from the current medic Tri-fold bag and the remaining 60% will fit in the resupply pack. The vest panels are made of olive drab nylon mesh materiel. The vest is adjustable for torso, length, and girth. The CMVS will provide the medic with hands free capability to easily carry medical supplies to the battlefield, and give them easy access to critical supplies when tending to injuries on the battlefield. It also allows the medic the flexibility to configure their own load distribution to meet mission needs and allow for comfort. The CMVS is a component of the MES, Surgical Instrument and Supply Set, Individual, UA 0246, Line Item Number LIN U65480. The basic issue of the CMVS is one per Surgical Instrument and Supply Set Individual (SISS). The CMVS pockets utilize the interlocking attaching strap system to attach moveable pockets to load bearing equipment that is low profile, very secure, and unaffected by extreme weather. This new system will replace the All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment (ALICE) clips. The interlocking attaching strap system has since been used on Land Warrior, Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment (MOLLE) and other clothing initiatives.

See what happens when you get two doctors talking shop!!

All I can say is that more than half of the ensuing conversation sounds absolutely disgusting. I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm certain that I really don't want to know.

I could never be a doctor!

Doc, in a nutshell, these are the major things I keep on hand. not counting the first aid related stuff like dressings, slings, etc.

My pharmaceuticals are fairly limited and directly related to family/loved one needs.

My wife has asthma: 2 aluminum D- O2 tanks with 2 regulators, 2 each nasal cannulas, N.R.B.'s and nebulizers, adult and pedi.
lots of 2.5mg albuterol, and solumedroll.

she is also allergic to bee stings: Epipen and multidose epi along with an assortment of needles and syringes.
if I have a line I may give Benedryl but hopefully the sub-cue Epi should suffice.

The rest of the drugs are mainly for diabetic/ D-50 and oral glucose/ Thiamine, and a few chest pain drugs that may buy a little time for the Pt such as 81mg asa, and sublingual nitro. The way I figure is I'm only one medic and If I run across anything serious then I'll use the best of my ability to help but any serious cardiac emergency stands little chance of survival without definitive hospital TX. Multifocal PVC's and non-specific CP I can treat with O2/ASPN/Nitro and buy some time to get to a facility, anything worse...................

Jump bag; pulse oximeter, adult and pedi B.P.cuff and stethoscope, Airway adjuncts, BVM, Combitube, 500ml sterile water, burn gel, etc.

Airway bag O2 tank with delivery devices both adult/pedi.

IV bag; 2/1000ml N.S.
1/1000ml R.L
2/500ml N.S.
1/100lm N.S. for Int flush or mixing meds.
4 select3 adjustable flow rate drip sets.

INT start kit; various caths in 14, 18, 20, and 22guages.
and of course the little alcoholpreps, touniquets, venoguards etc,

And less we forget: body substance isolation items and an OB kit.

This is not everything but its the main stuff.

This is getting boring Doc, lets talk about guns!
