BUIS, who really uses them?

Just a quick poll, for ppl with a flattop AR and optic, how many of you actually have (on the gun, could use) back up irons?

I don't fit, for now. My current upper is a bushy A1 style. When I get my new upper though, I plan on having BUIS and an EOTech.

I don't at the moment, but plan on throwing a BUIS on the gun at some point down the road when finances allow.

In a previous configuration I had an EOtech 552 with an ARMS 40 BUIS. I liked the setup and used the irons sometimes when I was in the mood. It was also nice to know that if the optic ever died, I was still good to go.

I've got an ACOG on the rifle now and so I haven't been too worried about it, since using the BUIS would require removing the optic etc.

Crazy not to in my opinion, on a rifle you may use to defend yourself or someone else.

Even with opics you'd have to remove, one of the throw lever QD mounts work great to get a broken optic out of the way.

Last carbine class I took, less than an hour in came "OK everyone assume your optic is broken, show me what you'd do then".

I don't believe in them. But again I can shoot rather accurately at 50 yards just by aiming off the barrel, so for me its just more weight and more money to spend.

Edit: this only applies to my tactical guns. Anything Hunting I like Iron sights that I can see. Just because I like my scope to be set for 200 and if something comes close I can just use the sites and not worry about shooting high or low.

I have iron sights on most scoped rifles. In 30 years of hunting a Redfield Illuminator, a Weaver K3 and a Leopuld has quit on me. So I keep my iron sights usable and know where they hit.

I rarely use any iron sights. Even my shotgun is scoped. I have a 257 that has only irons, but that is because I plan to use it that way for competitions that require it. On an AR I use only the scope.

Right now I don't have the $$$ for an optic, but once I do, a good BUIS will be factored in as "part of the price." It's just dumb not to have then on a CQB setup; on a "distance" piece, I can see it being unnecessary or a problem, but it depends on the setup.

I have back ups on all my flattop rifles.
I zero them using the ammunition I intend to shoot most in each particular rifle.
Every now and then I pull the optic and recheck the back up sights to insure they are still settled in.

I am a huge advocate for back up iron sights and quick detachable bases for any optics utilized on a combat rifle.

I do not have a BUIS on the rear of my AR. I use a bushnell trophy MP and can't quite afford to get the low profile flip up sight to fit under it. So I keep the tactical carry handle that came with the rifle with me when i take it out.

i have a buis and an eotech 512 on my ar but i think i have shot maybe 30 rounds through them. I just keep them on there for that one day in teh far distant future that the shtf and i run out of batteries

Your criteria does not apply. I have the Wilson Combat flip up rear sight on my flattop and it will probably be the only thing for a while. I'll may get an optic someday but I'm liking the sight picture I can get right now over the 20 inch barrel.

Definitely. I enjoy shooting with the iron sights, and frequently leave the optic at home. Always good to have a backup for the optic.

Set up to use both and have them zero'd to the same POI. If the Aimpoint is turned on it puts the dot right on top of the front sight.

I agree 110%. If it' a hunting rifle, no big deal but any defensive rifle IMHO, MUST have a BUIS if you are going to use any optic or electronic sight. When my wife came back from Balad a couple years back we went to Shootrite Firearms Academy with some of the money she saved during that deployment. I think it was on day 2 or 3 that her EO-Tech went down because the batteries died. All she did was reach up and flip up the Matech BUIS sight and pressed on until a break when she could swap out the batteries.

I plan on getting some whenever I get an optic. Co-witnessing and keeping the spirit of a rifle that can handle any job are things I like in most of my weapons.

Well my SU-16's came with open sights, but none of my AR's have them, and except for the initial sighting in I've never used them on the SU's. My Mini 14 and HK USC have them, but I've never used them, my SUB 2000 only has irons (or plastics if you must know).

Guess I'm an idiot, but I saved hundreds of dollars on BUIS and fancy ARMS mounts and bought ammo to practice with.

And yes, I have a BUIS on one of my ARs that has a Aimpoint M4 on it. The BUIS is a Troy.
