Can anyone either explain or point me in the direction of the reasoning and process for lubricating lead bullets? I was planning on ordering some bullets from Missouri bullet to make some inexpensive .38 special plinking rounds, and I can't figure out if you need to lube all lead bullets, or only if you cast them yourself etc...

You only have to lube cast lead bullets if you either buy them unsized and lubed, or if you cast them yourself. Any bullets you buy from Missouri Bullet will be properly sized and lubricated for you.

One Can't Stress The Importance of Proper Lubrication Enough... ;-)

MBC bullets come lubed so you don't have to worry about that. Bullet lube allows lead bullets to move through the barrel without metal-to-metal friction that will cause the lead to gall (smear) on the steel bore. If you cast your own lead bullets, you must lube them in some fashion else your barrel will get seriously leaded up. Some (me included) use lubri-sizers that size the cast bullet to a desired diameter (say, .358" for 38 Spl/357 Mag) from a slightly larger as-cast diameter (around .360" or so) and force lube into grooves in the bullet as it is pushed through the sizer die. Others use a "tumble-lube" bullet that is loaded in its as-cast diameter and simply tossed about in a lube solution (Lee makes these; others may, but Lee is known for them). The bullets you will get from MBC are already sized & lubed, and all you have to do is load & shoot. Brad, the owner, is frequent poster here, and you can be sure you won't find a better company, a better product, or better prices. Maybe as good, but none better. I cast less with MBC's selection, price & availablity - hard to justify the time involved nowadays...

Went to the range today and shot 600 rounds of lead reloads out of G27 with Lone Wolf barrel for practice.

There's a lot of debate as to what lube does. There has been a lot of experimenting, including with no lube at all. I see it as usually a lube, seal enhancer, and anti-flux. Here's a good article:
