$55 for 20 rounds!? My MBC 405gr #1 Buffalo's over 4895 will go stem to stern in a bull elk (that's about 4.5-5 FEET of penetration). And It will blow through a 10" oak tree and keep on chugging. And I can load those for something like $0.40 per round! I wonder how much extra penetration do you get for the extra $2.35 per round?
Yeah but it doubles as a Phillips head screwdriver....

Very interesting thread. I have a Marlin 1895 and use 405 gr. lead with a 13.5 gr. load of Unique and also have a 36 gr. load of Imr 4198. The 4198 gr load is somewhat stout and the Unique load is nice. I have read where some hunters have used the Unique load on deer so it does seem possible it would work on yotes, any comments. Want to stick with the 405 boolit. Thanks.

If it will kill deer, it'll kill yotes, you don't need tons of penetration or velocity, I used .22lr for a LONG time, and still do circumstantially, figure out what distance you wanna hit em at, and put in enough powder to get it there accurately, I don't subscribe to the energy rating any more but if you're truly needing a number, I'd say to keep it above 90 ft-lbs at impact and you're fine.

Shoot a good cast 405 gr bullet , load it using "trapdoor" loads, that will make a 45 cal hole in and out. Dead coyote plain and simple. Might even get a decent price on the hide in their winter prime.
You want to blow a coyote up, you need a soft jacket, with bullet speeds exceeding 2500 fps, not gonna happen in a 45-70

Those marlin 45-70's tend to have a pretty generous bore diameter. Cast bullets sized .460 usually yield the best accuracy in them.

I've taken a number of coyotes with the 45-70. I've used 300 gr jhp, 405 gr lfn, and even a Garrett 540 gr load (those things hurt on both ends of the rifle). As long as you hit the critter in the vitals it will be DRT.

I use a 405 gr soft cast lead hand load most often. Easy on me, and hard on the coyote.
