I have been researching pocket pistols for a while and narrowed it down to the Ruger LCP or the new Taurus TCP. Guess I should have gone w/ my gut as all 3 of my Tauri have been fantastic pistols and both of my Ruger semi-autos (I love Ruger revolvers) have been extremely disappointing. That may be heresy to some, but it's my experience. Anyhow, the deal breaker was the fact that the LCP had been out longer and seemed to be very well regarded. I took it home, cleaned and lightly lubed it, then worked the slide for about 2 hours while I watched a movie (If you like Sci-fi watch Surrogates).
Took 150 rounds of PMC (good luck w/ this brand in my AR and all my .45's) to the range. 12 FTE's. 11 of which were on the 2nd to last round of the mag. The 1 oddball was on the 3rd round. Stovepipes of the horizontal variety. Seems the empty didn't extract all the way and the new cartridge wedged beneath it so the mag had to be removed and the slide racked to clear it. Pretty disappointed. Came home and emailed Ruger the info and asked for their advice. On the upside, it was a pleasure to shoot, even w/ big mitts like mine. My friend felt it was hard on his trigger finger; I had no such problems as I typically fire w/ the pad of the finger. The sights took a little getting used to but it certainly shot nice and soft... Granted I had just fired 20 rounds of 360 grain .454 Casull through my Ruger Alaskan. Hopefully it's just a bad mag, wish it would have come w/ 2 to test out. Anyone have any similar experiences w/ the LCP, and what action did Ruger recommend?

That's too bad. Mine has been flawless with over 1000 rounds of all different types of ammo, but I have not tried PMC. Most reports I have read most people are very pleased and have no issues like you describe.

Try some different ammo, try if you can find one a different mag. I know it comes with only 1 mag but buy another if you want to see if that is the issue.

My LCP goes everywhere with me and I have complete confidence in it.

Wow, i have only shot reloads in mine but they worked great. Didnt even work up a load. Even had some buckled cases which i was worried about. They fed and shot just fine. Hope you get it figured out.

Glad you guys got good ones. I am sure Ruger will make it right. Look forward to it as it seems like a great little pistol.

I dont own the LCP but I do own a Diamondback and after shooting just slightly over 200 rounds through it in a week I really believe there is truth to it that all these little pistols need a break in.
Give it some more ammo time before writing it off.
And last, some ammo just does not agree with certain pistols.
I just bought a box of PMC yesterday to try out in my new pistol.
Good luck.

Glad you've had good luck with your Tauri', sorry you've had bad luck with your new LCP.

I would suggest that since you are having issues with your new LCP a return to the factory might be in order, and from all I read Ruger is EXCELLENT in Customer Service and warranty repairs.

I would recommend you try different ammo before you give up and ship it off tho..

In fact, if you want to google the CS/Warranty records of Tauri and Ruger for comparison I'd surmise Ruger has the better of the two.

I am fortunate in that my LCP came out of the box reliable and accurate, so you know I'm a happy camper.

Just personal opinion, no offense to Tauri' lovers.

Best Wishes,

Jesse.

P.S. Someone said the LCP only comes with one mag.. Mine came with two. What about yours?

Sorry to hear about your problems. I agree with you on the way it shoots. Lots of people say they are a "little mule" or something like that but I think they are comfortable to shoot and fairly soft shooting overall. Try a different mag, fire some more rounds through it and if it still acts up, I'm sure Ruger will make it right. Add me to the list of people that have a flawless LCP. Useful little pistol.

Nope!

Try running a couple hundred rounds through it before contacting Ruger. While it hasn't been an issue with mine, I have heard that some of the LCPs work better after a break in period.

Guess I should have gone w/ my gut as all 3 of my Tauri have been fantastic pistols and both of my Ruger semi-autos (I love Ruger revolvers) have been extremely disappointing.

I love variety of opinion. :D I own 3 Ruger autos, three Ruger revolvers (single action) and a 10/22. I own 3 Taurus revolvers. I ain't in a mood to sell any of 'em, all fantastic firearms. I think you might have gotten a lemon or, well, I just don't know, might just need a break in, but Ruger will make it right if it's the fault of the gun. Ruger CS is fantastic.

My LCP does not like PMC or Wolf. Winchester, Remmy, Federal, Hornady works great in mine. Magtech works the best thru mine.

Everyone makes a lemon once in a while, some people get unlucky and end up buying(your lcp) or watching(surrogates) it.

You know, Ruger seems to have been having quite some issues with their newer products, with their AR, going through the alphabet to the LCP, and ending with their LCR. It's almost as if they are pumping out products commie chinese style with out much forethought, QC or research. And yet, it's always ok because the have a good guarantee, according to some. Is this a new vein of "fanboyism"?

Every time I hear about their products having an issue, being recalled and what not, but being ok because they are Ruger and have a good guarantee policy, it inevitably takes me way back to that memorable scene with Chris Farley from 1995's "Tommy Boy" which you can read here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114694/quotes?qt0402662.

BTW I really like their Blackhawks.

You might want to try a different brand before you send it back.

I haven't tried pmc in mine, but I've never had a malfunction with it. That's with several different brands. I think you made a good choice, you just have to get the kinks worked out. It's a real bummer having a malfunctioning firearm. But some of my most reliable guns, at present time are ones I had to get fixed.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I will start searching for another brand of ammunition today. See if I can't get another 100 or so rounds through it before Ruger replies. The fact that the jams were almost always 2nd to last round in the mag, makes me want to try another mag before I ship it back as well.

I have had zero problems out of mine. I have not tried any PMC ammo though. Its a great little shooter.

I practice with Fiocchi ammo a lot.
Really any .380 I can get my hands on.
If it doesn't run any better after another box I'd send it back to Ruger.
They'll make it right.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I'll echo what most others have said here and say that mine has been flawless in the 240 rounds i've put through it so far. I've shot WWB FMJs, Magtech FMJ, 90gr Hydrashok reduced recoil, and Remington Golden Saber 90gr JHPs. I DID have two bobbles but I wont call them failures. When my friend was shooting it the slide didn't go into battery twice. A slight nudge and it went right in. I think this was because he wasn't retracting the slide all the way back before letting it sling forward.

I just bought 10 boxes of Gold Dots which are really hard to find in these parts, and that will be my carry round. (Can't carry in MD, so it will be when i'm out of state :-( ). I'm sure the gold dots will function fine too.

I'm sure ruger will make it right.

Send it back! Call Ruger and get them to send you a prepaid shipping label.

A friend has an LCP that he sent back because it would drop the magazine after each shot. He called it his "single shot automatic" LOL.

When he got it back the documentation said that they had fixed FOUR problems with the gun. Now it works perfectly.

They have a warranty and good customer service, use it.

Bill

ok mine has been flawless and i never cleaned it or oiled it yet only 150 rounds though
i wouldnt say its pleasant to shoot however it starts to string after a bit
mine came with one mag

I agree with some posters. It doesn't sound like it's functioning properly. Ruger is excellent with their customers, let them have a chance to fix it for you. You shouldn't have to "wonder" for the rest of the gun's life "if....".

If you don't let them fix it, you probably will.
