I have the red dot named above mounted on my 10/22. I decided I’d like to move it a little further forward. Unfortunately, I apparently no longer have the right Allen wrench for it. So I dug out an Allen wrench that, frankly, felt right, and tried to remove the mounting screw. And, as you might have guessed, promptly stripped out the “shoulders” in the screw. (Let me add, it was exceptionally soft metal.).

Any advice on next steps I can try, or should I just head to my local gunsmith?

If you run a drill bit into the head of the allen screw, when you arrive at the shoulder the head will come off and you'll be shopping for a $0.15 screw. It's probably easier than the EasyOut you probably don't have.

Do you have a tiny “easy out”?

Sometimes a small screwdriver can be pushed in and is able to find enough of a shoulder to screw it out.

I have this same red dot and removed/re-installed it a couple of nights ago. IIRC it was either a Torx T10 or T15...of course, that doesn't help now. :)

Shorten the torx till you get to the tapper then pound it in with a small hammer while supporting the other side.
Or drill the head off the bolt as suggested.....i usually try the torx trick since I have a pile of cheap bits, then if that fails take the head off.

IMG_5876.png Having this laying around is really cheap insurance against that ever happening again. Everybody knows that the second that you buy the right tool then the situation never happens again for you to need that tool. $10 at Walmart.

Glad it's out. Saw a screw break in the sight installation class at TSC (NRA Summer Gunsmihting skool). A broken screw extractor was used to remove it. MSC has them.
