I'm looking for some flip-open scope covers SIMILAR to the ones from Butler Creek except with 1 added feature- I want something that doesn't break so easily, and seemingly for no reason. I've lost count of how many I broke over the years. The US mil furnishes these things with all of the sniper scopes, and in training (and elsewhere) I broke more than a few. I used to find pieces of them on the ground as a student and later as an instructor on stalking lanes, and we kept a box of them on a team and in our supply cage as students got done with an exercise and showed up with half a scope cover. I still break them from time to time (like yesterday) and its not uncommon to find the cap part of one laying around the benches and on the firing lines at my range. This was also something that I always kept in the back of my mind as a potential major tactical problem, since these things could potentially be lost during real operations overseas, and later found by the enemy- thus compromising the presence of snipers in the area, and their routes and firing positions. For obvious reasons, no one- especially snipers and anyone doing recon/surveillance type missions- should leave anything on the battlefield that would alert the enemy to their presence and potentially provide them with any intel. Even if the sniper knows the thing broke during infil or exfil, he may be unable to find it in the dark. Even though I'm not involved in that type of work any more, I still would like gear that isn't always breaking and needing to get replaced. So is there anything out there that doesn't suck?

I haven’t broke any either but I am also pretty conscious about banging my scopes into stuff.

I do have a rifle that has some softer, more pliable covers. I am not sure of the brand but it’s a hinged cover without the little red push button. Feels flimsy to me but flexing without breaking sounds like what you are looking for.

I have lost one or two scope covers (Vortex brand covers never seem to fit tight enough) but I have never broken one of any brand. I tape mine on to ensure I don't loose them now. I am moderately hard on my optics and have never broken a scope or a cover. Yet...

For the price its hard to beat Butler Creek covers. There are better covers out there but they are alot more and I can buy and replace a Butler Creek two or three times for the same price.

FWIW: I have three Butler Creeks and have had one of them for years. None have broken. However, none of them have been exposed to any rugged field use.

Better ones are available if you're willing to pay. Leupold makes really nice metal ones for their scopes, but they're like $90 a pop. There are other ones too, Vortex might make some.

I've broken a few myself over the years, and when I was younger I hunted pretty hard. They are cheap enough that I never griped too much when I had to replace one. I think the flip-up design is great. Pretty quiet and fast.

I use Vortex Defender caps. The mount and hinge are rubberized, less prone to cracking than the harder plastic-y butler creeks, AND most importantly, they fold flat back against the scope so they’re less prone to snag. And they’re cheap. I’m banging my optics into barricades and portholes with Defender caps on my PRS rifles, and driving my rifle often by my scope with my hand torquing the flip covers, and I’m using them on my coyote calling, hog and deer hunting rifles, and my up-mountain rifles, trekking through brush and packing and I’ve not yet broken a Defender cap.
