I've had a C&R lic for a while. Never bought anything using it up till now. Was looking at several old rifles on an auction site. I know if I purchase them using my CR I need to log them. Now I've been told by some, anything I might own that qualifies as CR no matter how purchased has to be logged.
Is that true ?
Doesn't make sense but neither do a lot of laws.

My understanding is that you log it if you used the license to buy it. The rule is in that big blue book o' laws that came with the license.

Edit to add: here's the answer.
Check the section headed "Required." It says "Must enter into the A/D record all curios and relics acquired after receipt of the collector’s license."

Here we go again!!
It's actually quite simple.... Any C&R qualified firearm that you acquire during the effective dates of your license needs to be entered in your bound-book. It doesn't matter how you acquired it, bought it at a garage sale, found in it the trash, given to you by Aunt Betty, etc.. They all need to be in your book.
Same thing for any C&R qualified firearm that you might dispose of during the license period. They need to be logged out of the book.
As for C&R qualified firearms that you may have owned before your license (or firearms that have become C&R qualified in the interim), they do not need to be logged unless you sell/dispose of them during the license period. In that case you log them into your book as "from your private collection" or "previously owned" and then log them out to the new owner.

Yes, and the applicable regulation is at 27 CFR 478.125(f) (emphasis added):
...Each licensed collector shall enter into a record each receipt and disposition of firearms curios or relics.....

I should have mentioned that even if you buy a C&R qualified firearm from a dealer and he makes you fill out a 4473, (some dealers won't honor a FFL03, but that's a different conversation) you still need to enter it in your book.
I had this happen at Cabela's a few years ago. I thought they were going to have a cow when I told them I needed a copy of their license even if they wouldn't honor mine, I still had to log it. (It took a couple of levels of management before I finally got a copy....)

You don't actually need a copy of the liscense. You do need the liscense number and the experation date. I feel much more comfrotable actually having a signed copy for my records.

All excellent and useful replies to this 03FFL C&R License question. THR is quite often a great forum and source of information. Just wanted to reply and thank all who take the time to share their knowledge. Happy New Year!

I've had one for years and I recently "accidentally" learned something. My C&R expired 01 MAR. ATF sent me the renewal form and it got buried on the counter. I found it basically on 01 MAR. I filled it out real fast and mailed it off with a check. ATF helpfully cashed the check but said I was too late for a renewal and would have to re-apply.

I was a bit angry at the time and even posted about it. Turns out there is a silver lining. Since my C&R had officially expired, my book was now dead as well. I could dispose of it anyway I felt was appropriate. I think we all have a nagging feeling at some point that some little glitch is hiding in there... I got to throw mine away. I re-applied (didn't need fingerprints or photos) and they eventually sent me a new one. I sent the new one out to the places that give me dealer prices on "stuff." I haven't even started a new book since I haven't bought or sold any firearms since then. (Of the C&R variety.)

So my point is... maybe it is a good idea to let the C&R die every now and then and start over!!

That's actually a common practice among many collectors.

I have so few C&R guns in my current book, I often don't bother and just do the renewal. Although I think I have a renewal coming up some time this year, and may just let it lapse and reapply a month or so later.

I have had my C&R for 6 years and have just sent in my renewal for another 3 years. Here's a question (example) for you all. Say I had a C&R FFL as of 2013 when I purchased a gun manufactured in 1967. It didn't qualify as a C&R at that time so I go through my Class 1 FFL to acquire it. OK...now it's 2017 and the gun qualifies as a C&R gun. I have had the C&R since 2011 and still have it as of 2018. So, does the phrase "during the effective dates of your license " mean that I need to add that gun to my C&R book?

Thanks all. Jim
