Choices include 7.62 russian, .223 and .308 nato
Which 7.62 Russian? The x39, the x54 rimmed, or both? NATO doesn't designate cartridges in SAE measurements. I assume you meant 7.62 NATO (7.62x51) or .308 Winchester you typed ".308 nato (sic)".

Yeah, sorry. Typed that too quick.

To clarify, I've seen them available in socal in these calibers:

7.62x39 russian
.308 winchester
.223, not 5.56, (though many have reported using 5.56 successfully, YMMV. I wouldn't try it personally.)

I understand that 5.45x39 russian is an option as well, but I haven't seen any in the LGS racks. Possibly a special order around here?

I knew California had some stupid laws, but dear Jesus, who is running your state?!

I vote for UHaul. As in UHaul ass out of there.

I guess I'd take the Bullet Button rifle if I REALLY wanted an AR. For the sake of your poll, I'm voting Bullet Button, although my first response was "neither."
oh my god this post by inebriated made me pee myself.. but I voted b-button

I voted featureless, only because I didn't want to add other options to your poll.

Save some cash and get an imported, unmodified Saiga. Sporting configuration with a 10 round mag. 10000x better than a featureless AR, IMO. Then when you escape from Calcatraz, you can convert it.

I'd skip all of that and get a Garand. If CA is going to strip everything good from an AR, might as well get something that actually has character and history.

SwissArmy, all good. I knew the .308 Win Saigas were on the longer action SVD based receiver, which was originally designed for 7.62x54R. I've never seen a 54R Saiga, but I didn't know if they might be some California distributor exclusive thing. I think the .223 Saigas are marked .223, but chambered 5.56; and I'm sure someone here or on the various AK forums knows for sure. Of course, opposite of the .223/5.56 thing, commercial .308 is slightly hotter than 7.62 NATO, so 7.62 NATO ammo would be fine a .308 Saiga.

One more point about the California bullet button. For maintainance of the gun you can remove the bullet button by slipping a narrow bladed screwdriver into the button's "hole" and unscrewing it. The "button" then comes out just like the regular release button.

If you someday leave the state of California, you can unscrew the bullet button and replace it with a standard AR release button that you can buy at a gunshow for 2$. The internal spring is too short, but you can replace it with with a fuel injector regulator spring from a 1979 VW Rabbit.

I do live in CA. I personally would not want to use a semi-auto rifle for self defense that required modifications for things such as bullet buttons. As such, my top choices would be either the mini-14/30 or M1A depending on what caliber I liked.

That is incredibly specific... does car color matter? :p lol
Umm, well, that is to say that if I ever left the state of California and replaced the bullet button with a regular magazine release that I could purchase at the Ontario gun show for 2$, I could use a spring that I can find in my tool box that came out of the injector assembly of my old 79 Rabbit. It just so happens that that particular spring is exactly the right length and fits in the well under the release perfectly. That is of course if I left the state of California. Since the spring is for a black rifle, a part from a black Rabbit is appropirate. Mine however was chestnut brown, but the spring might still work just fine!

Just rented an AR last week that was equipped with the much maligned bullet button.

I was honestly surprised at how much of a non-issue it was, as much as it's slammed online. When using pmags equipped with the ultimate bullet-button tool, you simply shoot to slide lock, put a full mag in your hand, drop the empty mag (into your hand for combat mag change or drop it to the bench/ground), slap in new mag, hit bolt release.

If all your mags have the tool on them, and you're good to go.

Why not just go with a SU-16? They're legal in CA and they take AR magazines and you don't have to go through all that other crap. One of the new (post 2006) Mini-14's would be good too...

I personally wouldn't bother with a CaLegal AR. I'd get something less of a hassle and the AR is meant to be fast and fun gun. The California regulations sort of ruin that. I'd personally rather get a proper battle rifle which meets all the laws like a Garant, SVT-40, 91/30, or Lee-Enfield.

I do not believe the original post is correct in the use of the bullet button. You CAN use a tool (like tip of a bullet) to press the mag release and reload the magazine. You do not have to insert rounds individually into an open breach.

Yea, I know the bullet button thing is a pain and seems senseless (to me as well), but that is the law in CA. At least, one way to get around a long arm with pistol grip, and flash hider. Buy the way you will need to get a lower that is not on the band list.

I sure am enjoying my DPMS LR308 with 20 round mags here in FL.

Stripped lowers are a time a dozen in california if you want to build your own.

Shops now carry every major manufacturer of AR with a bullet button.

Smith and Wesson, LMT, Delton, Stag, etc. These are normal AR's with the simple addition of the DOJ approved bullet button.

Now you are able to buy Pmags, with the Ultimate bullet button, which becomes your tool.

Tool = magazine that you are already carrying.

Bullet button rifles are pathetic. It’s an indicator of how far gone things are in Kali that people think kludged rifles are some sort of victory. If you can’t leave the state, get a Mini-14 or a M1A.

I vote for the UHAUL. I used one to get to Colorado and can't believe the awesome things you can buy out of the news paper, or just imagine going to a yard sale and finding an AR-10 for sale along with a Barrett 50 BMG. I live on teh western slope and am so glad to be here. Get the UHAUL the economy is better here too.

California's gun laws (And most of it's politicians) should go to the UK. That's one of the reasons I moved to the "Brady rated 0" State of Arizona. :)
