As most who have read my few and far between posts here probably already concluded I often come up with some somewhat wild ideas that I just have to try.
After a crazy day of deer hunting today I got another one............. I NEED to shoot a deer with a 10 gauge. Don't ask me why as its not practical...expensive slugs, 12 pound shotgun, "interesting" recoil, all to shoot a puny little deer but I decided I need to do.
My buddy has a 10 gauge (bps) and the bigger stores carry slugs so next year I will shoot me a deer with a 10 gauge. It oughta be interesting.
Anyone think I am crazy?

I wouldn't call you "Crazy". More like "Adapted too well to our modern world".

A suggestion, borrow your bud's 10 and run some shells through it BEFORE plunking down your money.

Dave,
I won't be buying a 10 gauge, just borrowing if for awhile to run some slugs through it for practice/testing, then taking it afield for one of those "stupid deer" shots that you tend to get during first shotgun season.
I've shot it before and its a nice gun, obviously too heavy for general use although the weight makes recoil seem surprisingly mild with decent form.

"With decent form"....

Amen.

Go ahead and get it out of your system. I suggest a wearable pad like the PAST and anti inflammatories.

An old acquaintance of mine used a 375 H&H Model 70 for MD whitetail. I guess this is the shotgun equivalent....

Dave,
Thanks for the advise. I guess maybe its I haven't done it, no one I know has done it, so by gosh it better be done. I'm betting packing that "hefty girl" to my stand isn't going to be much fun so one deer will probably all this exploit lasts.
I think I will skip the anti-inflamatories (asprin, I assume?). I guess I took to dads philosophy when I asked him about pain killers. He always said, "If you take a drug for pain, you can injuy it worse without knowing it. If you don't take the drug, whatever it is that ails you will let you know when you push things too hard." I've kinda adopted this code. The last time I took a pain killer (other than a couple college induced headaches) was when I fractured my foot in two places about 2.5 years ago. They had me took a couple codine tablet at the hospital and send me home with a bottle of the stuff. I threw them away. Sure it hurt a bit when I was doin stuff out and about, but I always knew when I needed to lay off it a touch.
Applied to shotgunning I guess this means that if it hurts you are probably doing something wrong.
On a side note....do "anti-A's" help with bruising? I think they do but am not sure as I don't bruise. My last bruise was also back when a fractured my foot, had a bruise from heal down to my little toe, course thats why I decided to go to do doc- if I get a bruise it normally means a broken bone of some sort (have had my share). I know some people bruise easy so if the "anti-A's" help there I can see the light. We always wanted bruised in high school (for the girls you know) but most older and smarter people never seemed to be impressed.
Have a nice night,
Matt
P.S. Dave- why do I get the idea that a 20 year old Dave McC would volunteer to do this crazy idea with me?

A 20 year old Dave McC would have been standing there grinning and saying something like "H*ll Yeah!". Of course, said 20 year old had a few saddle broncs, high school football, a couple car wrecks and some fights behind him. Not to mention a Remington Rolling Block carbine of about 6 lbs weight that I ran a few rounds of 45-70 through.

On the threshold of adolescence, I hit the ground running...

As the Captain in the Katzenjammer Kids used to say....

"Ve are too soon oldt und too late schmart"...

Anti Inflammatories reduce inflammation, of course. Inflammation slows healing.
This is beside thr anagelsic effect.

I take lots of pills, almost all prescribed. The rest are vitamins, supplements and of course, Anti-Is.

Back to the 10 guage. Permanent damage is unlikely. Use good form and work up slowly.

HTH....
