Got a question.

for 30-30. Cast bullets. 150 gr copperized 30 cal flat point. i was thinking of trying out trailboss powder. Have you used this powder i was thinking of going trail boss as it shows it should be pretty good with cast bullets. What powder are you using for cast.

you have any sucesfull loads and formulas

The plated bullets are "ok" for low velocity loads such as a "non-gaschecked" cast bullet. The plating eliminates the need for a lubricant such as SPG or 50/50 alox-beeswax.

Because it can come off the bullet if pressures or velocities are too high, it can't be pushed, in the case of the .30/30 much past 1,500-1,700fps with good results.

HOWEVER; for your stated purpose of using IMR-TrailBoss, it'll be quite a good match of application.

I've never used such bullets in the .30/30 but from experiences with other similar components in different caliber/applications I think that you'll be satisfied with the results.

Personnaly, I cast my own bullets to include those I use in the .30/30; in fact my first casting efforts were with my still favorite mould for it, the Lee 150gr FNGC. I size these to .311" and with a Hornady crimp-on gascheck and lubed they run 157gr with my current mould. My brother has my original mould and it runs 160gr. A perfect match for the .30/30.

I prefer 30.0gr to 32.0gr of RL-15 for about 2,200fps. It gives MOA accuracy from my Marlin/Glenfield M30 and has taken a number of deer and pigs.

At the recommended charge levels for TrailBoss, your component selection will perform nicely and with the copper coating, there will be no need to clean any jacketed bullet fouling from the barrel and then re-condition it to the cast lead bullets.

I'm working up my load for Berry's plated 150 gr FN w/ W748. Should be similar to your "copperized" NBCs

Berry's catalog says the max. velocity is 1,700 fps for these. I've heard that the issue is that at higher rotaional velocities the copper starts to come off....which ruins the tragectory

I haven't honed in just yet and don't have my notebook handy...so I can't give the specifics. Last batch gave a ~1" group at 50 yds using the large apperture that came with my Williams 5D on my 336.

BUT...at this reduced velocity, I saw ~6" drop when I switched over to the 100yd range.

At the same time I've been working up to the max. load published by Lee for Speer 150 gr. jacketed FPs. No correction or sight adjustment required when going from 50 yd to 100 yd range.

Wish I had got the Williams Foolproof w/ the "click" adjustments and optional diopters now. :(

I don't want to make sight adjustments w/ the 5D so the Berry's might not work out for what I want to do.

:what:
wow 6 inch drop at 100 yards.

yep you are correct when you mentioned about the copper coming off. i read the recomend charges similiar to cast lead. Same time im not too sure about win 748 powder. may need something like blue dot or that trail boss. from what i hear its better for cast loads. i guess im just going to have to do some experimenting. very light loads though.

Plated bullets and copperized bullets are two completely different things, copperized are more like dusted with a copper powder, you can't peel off the copperized coating, where you can separate a plated coating from the lead bullet.

I've used the National Bullet copperized bullets, they work quite well, but they aren't plated. Since they are lubed just like a normal cast bullet they shoot dirty, but there was no leading at all.
