Have this model coming in tomorrow so I can use it for the extended PA Flintlock season. Now I know that you use 4f (or 3f/2f) for the pan charge, but can you use (not 4f of course) it for the main charge? I see reference to loose powder, but I get the feeling that refers to pyrodex loose powder vs black powder. I'd like to just use one type of powder (even though I know this model can and is slightly unique in being able to use pellets) and I'm just wondering if I can use normal black powder for the main charge and what type, as the manual is silent on it.

you can not use 4f in the barrel as the main charge, it builds up to much pressure.

2f or 3f is fine and highly recommended over pellets. A flintlock with pyrodex or t7 is a joke, an even bigger joke with pellets.

I'd go with goex 2f for the barrel and 4f goex for the pan prime.

Thanks! I should have been clearer with what I wrote that I wasn't intending to use 4f in the main charge.

I wanted to use goex for the main charge as I've heard that pyrodex us a pain and all bp subs are corrosive anyway so why not just use bp.

I'm going to have to use a sub for 4f as the pan charge as it's not available anywhere near me just 2f and 3f.

How do I figure out the bp charge for the main charge as the manual (you can see it as the link) does really explain much and seems to only discuss loose bp sub or pellets, hence my concern that for some reason real bp isn't meant to be used for the main charge in it.

You can sub 4 F by just grinding up 3F or 2F a bit with a mortar and pestal or just about anything that comes to mind. If you keep the volume you are grinding down very small ( like one pan charge) it can be quite safe.

No need to grind up the larger granules. They work just fine as priming charges.
BP ignites at a substantially lower temperature than any of the Subs. If one wants to use a substitute, it needs to be duplexed. A few grains of BP down the barrel before the main charge. Main charge should be reduced by the amount of the kicker.
The only reason to do this is if you cannot find Real BP and need to use a sub. You still need real BP to light the substitute but a pound used this way will last for hundreds of shots.
