Can shotguns have pistol grips in CA?

This is the most common question we field at California gun shows.

The complete answer is that with pump shotguns you can do anything you want so long as the barrel is 18" long or more and the overall length is 26" or more. This means pistol grips, folders, collapsible stocks, you name it.

With semi-autos, as the previous poster said, pistol grips are outlawed when combined with collapsible stocks.

All California gun owners should own and read How to Own a Gun & Stay Out of Jail by John Machtinger. Available at Amazon, your nearest gun store, or:

What do u call the pistol-grip models of the Mossberg shotguns?

Painful.

Seriously, have you ever fired a full-house load of 00 buck through ANY 12 gauge? My Mossberg 500 with the full stock bruised and battered my shoulder, and I'm about 6 foot even and 190 pounds. I wish I had taken pics. If you must have a PG, get the full stock with the PG. That is, of course, if you actually intend to shoot it. If not, then get the dual PGs, including that one on the forearm I've seen advertised, and be done with it. If you do shoot the darn thing, you'll make some part of your body black and blue. :)

You poor [people] in CA. Why is that even a question in your state??
You could not PAY ME ENOUGH to live in CA or a host of other states.
My condolences to you. I think that I will stick with MN.

And you stay in "frisco". I can put a 20rd clip in my L1A1 and go deer hunting.
You can't even get , let alone use one of these rifles. You could not pay me enough to live in CA.

FLAK. That's what I am talking about.

(Mmmm, I smell coffee.)
I can use my semi L1A1 for any hunting in MN.
I can also use my Clip fed M1A and CTME.
MN has no mag restrictions for hunting or anything else.

Kenshin,

To answer your question to the best of my knowledge, I pull 12276.1 out from CA DOJ's very own website.

12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean

(6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
(A) A folding or telescoping stock.
(B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
(7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
(8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.

In other words, we can legally own a shotgun with a pistol-gripped stock here in the state of California.

As to how the legalese is applied for imported semiautomatic shotguns such as the Fabarms and Benellis, I haven't found a clear answer as that falls under Federal law.

Here's a link to some massive discussion with regard to a telescoping stocks.
