I've got a Smith 645, which has a steel frame. I know I can use that to shoot Remington +P+ .45ACP ammo, but what about my dad's Sig P220 .45? It has an aluminum frame, I believe, and I don't know whether it could handle the stiffer rounds. It's got a good reputation for long term shooting, but have never tried a +P+.

Thanks!

Not be a smart butt, but are you sure they're +P+? If they are +P+, I wouldn't use them; the P220 can only handle small portions of regular +P. The P220ST with its stainless frame can handle pretty much whatever.

Never seen +P+ ammo in .45 acp, just some +P. When you get beyond +P you have the .45 super. Any of the Sig 220's manufactured after the early 80's have a heavier recoil spring to allow for the use of +P .45 acp ammo by Law enforcement. The spring should have a green paint on it to indicate the heavier spring.

From Wolf Gunsprings:

P220 RECOIL SPRING NOTES:
1. Current production has green painted recoil springs rated at 20 Lbs.
2. Earlier models had a black recoil spring rated at 15 Lbs.
3. Super .38 model has a 14 Lb. factory recoil spring.
4. Browning BDA .45 has a 14 Lb. factory recoil spring.

If you have an earlier model you can buy a replacement recoil 20 lb spring from Wolf.

You're right. It's +P only. Perhaps I confused it with some 9mm. Anyway, the gun is most likely the newer variety, but I'll check. With the 20lb spring, can it shoot the standard stuff okay? I always opt for a lighter bullet rather than the 230-gr.

Haven't seen much on the gun, but I'm not fond of it in that the hammer drop safety always manages to pinch the fleshy part of my thumb when activated. The double action trigger also is hard and when dry fired, the gun's vibration is grossly uncomfortable.

Can't knock it's reputation, though.

Mine came with the 20 lb factory spring and it cycles standard velocity factory and reloads without any problems.
