Great gun and an amazing price. Getting a letter might give you some more info on this gun as Fuff points out. Or just give Roy Jinks a call 800-331-0852 extension 223 he's a real friendly guy.

Looks about like my nickel pre-10. It's a 5 screw with an S serial #. I was told it was made in 1946 or 1947. I picked it up at a yard sale about 4 years ago for ............well, I beat your price by a few bucks.

Seeing that you next to stole it, you should get it "lettered" to confirm the information you are getting here.

Yes, I'm going to do that. I'll be sure to share my official findings here.

Thanks guys. :D

Has anyone thought to swing the cylinder out and check to see if there are any model numbers stamped under the crane on the frame??? You know...Like MOD 10-5??

Nice piece by the way...Enjoy my mod 10s a lot...

Bushmaster- It's obvious from the photos that the gun was made in the 1940s. No chance it is model marked.

Don't know about Wes but the first thing I did was swing the cylinder out and look for a model #. There wasn't one so I got some help over on the S&W forum. Like Saxon said, these guns were obviously made in the 40s.

Don't sell that gun. It's a nice piece and you *stole* it at that price.

Then again, if you do sell it, sell it to me. I'll buy it in a heartbeat. That is very nice M&P. Those old Smiths have character the newer guns lack.

Yep, that's the first thing I did, which is why I was confused... if it doesn't have a model in there, I get pretty confused.

The only number in there is the serial number.

Anybody know of a good book on S&W?
Wes

Model numbers didn't come into use until 1957 or thereafter.

"The" book is Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas. Jim by the way is a member of THR, and you will also find him at: www.armchairgunshow.com

The book is available from his site, and also www.amazon.com

But don't get the book, 'cuz if you do you'll learn so much that I can't pillage 'ya anymore...
