The SASS is more than the regular LR-308s, it was still $1799-1899 at discount outlets pre-Obama, probably MSRP or more at most other places.
DPMS makes two SASS rifles. One in 5.56 and one in 7.62 (marked .308 but has the upgraded fully fluted 7.62 barrel). The SASS 5.56 can be had for about $1500 pre-Obama... not sure what they are now but probably still in that neighborhood as they never caught on like the 7.62.
When the DPMS SASS .308 first came out the barrel was not fully fluted (only fluted up to the gas block). Then when the 2nd generation fully fluted barrels came out there was a huge backorder and it was around $2000 OTD (early 2007 time-frame and Obama was no where in sight). Then prices stabilized around $1800 or so (give or take). That is when I purchased mine as I had been timing the market back in early 2008.
It is a heck of a bargain as it easily competes with out of the box bolt action rifles in terms of accuracy (Tikka, Savage, and even the 700) and comes standard with forward assist, dust cover, JG adjustable trigger, low-pro gas block, magpul stock, competition grip, BUS, mounted collapsable telescopic front bi-pod, fully fluted barrel, and rails all anodized the same nice deep black hue as the rest of the rifle.
The add-ons alone come to well over $800! This is probably DPMS's best rifle to date and the biggest bargain. You can easily shoot sub MOA on a bet all day long with Federal 168gr ammo.
The only competition the DPMS SASS .308 has is Noveske and if they are truly going for near $3K I would probably just save my pennies and pay the $3300 for the Noveske but I am sure you can still find the DPMS SASS for ~$2500 if you look hard enough.
I like my DPMS SASS .308 so much I ordered an AAC 762SD for it as I think I will like shooting it without ear protection. Anyway good luck!
