looking for the ultimate pack/fishing/beat up gun. a gun i can shoot a million times reliably, that can easily be maintained, beat to death, dropped in the dirt and water that will keep ticking provided i take care of it properly after use....caliber isn't really an issue...i try to stick to .45 and 9mm but i want a gun for this express purpose...a gun i can take out fishing or ghiking and just rely on. i don't really feel like beating up my sigs or glocks for this purpose, though they'd probably hold up.

i should add the Ruger 95 is what springs to mind most right now....im looking for a cheapie but goodie...a smith is a good suggestion

So you want a gun you can abuse but still have work reliably every time that can be had cheap?

Seems to me you already own one since you said you owned some Glocks. If you want them to stay pristine, I would find a police trade-in Glock that had already been worn and would be less expensive. Bud's has used Glock 23 trade-ins for under $350.

I'm sure lots of ideas are forthcoming; mine is a bersa thunder... get one in 9mm for ammo compatability, or get the thunder .380 to have a cheap gun that will also fill the need for a small, light pack (or deep conceal) option.

just one opinion out of many.

Based on the way you baby your Glocks, if you do find another gun that meets all your requirements, I'll bet that you turn that other gun into a beauty queen as well. Your requirements are not insignificant. So, that will be a hell of a gun, just like your Glocks.

Maybe a used Taurus 92? They go pretty cheap and the open slide would make it easy to drain water out of. I don't know if the 92 is the best design if you're going to put tens of thousands of rounds thru it, but that doesn't sound like your intended use here. They're also pretty big guns with nice size trigger guards, which might be nice if you're wearing gloves.

The Walther P5 police trade-ins that SOG was selling a bit ago for less than $400 springs to mind. Nothing's inexpensive about this one, however --except, of course, for the price.

I am going to get beat up for this :D ... but get a Hi Point.
Their big, ugly as sin, but absolutely reliable. Also, you can usually find one for under $150 that's new!

For a gun that will get beat-up or lost over the side of a boat; why not spend a small amount?

Just read the thread below:

Also with the Hi-Point if you beat it all to hell there is the lifetime warranty.

If he treats a Glock with that much care and devotion, however, just think of the old world craftsmanship of Walther.

White silk gloves to handle it, its own spa treatment days, feeding it chocolate flavored ammunition...

:D

+1 on the Hi-Points.

I'd also suggest the SW9VE. Under $300, American made, and there's places across the net to learn how to fix the "lawyer-proofed" trigger from 12 pounds (not so bad for a revolver guy like me) to something nicer around 6-8 lbs.

Romanian Tokarev. They are about $200. They are utterly reliable. They are accurate out to 100yds. The ammo is cheap by the case, and the 7.62x25 round is incredible.
I would take a tok over any HiPoint (nothing against HiPoint.

My first thought upon reading your subject line was a glock (ironically my second was a sig P6). I guess cheap is relative. If a glock is too fancy I guess you could get a hi point.

Used glocks go for $400 what is the price range you are looking at?

though they'd probably hold up.
they would however any excuse to buy another gun is a good one, and like the above member i will recommend the ruger p95 they are inexpensive, built tough and take a beating, accurate and reliable, and they are backed by a great company. i used to have one and it was a reliable shooter for sure.

personally a handgun/ firearm of any kind for me is a tool, like a hammer is a tool. i take care of my guns but i am by n means easy on them. my guns are well worn and in more places that most, i don't plan on selling them and the wear looks good to me like it is actually used not a safe queen.
