I'd just go with a heavy plain shaft. The problem I have with the sharks teeth serrations is it makes it look like a weapon. Why draw unwanted attention.
I think besides looking a bit too menacing, they also weaken the strength somewhat and also limit your grip options depending on what techniques you are trained in. Their supposed to be for grinding against an assailant, and at least for me, this is not how I was ever trained to use a cane and I have doubts how useful it is.
No, they don't weaken the cane. Those of us that own Canemaster canes have been beating them against all sorts of training dummies and haven't had a crack or break.
The grinding against the opponent idea is their secondary purpose. They're intended primarily to provide a gripping surface for some of the more advanced throwing techniques.
In the system I train in, a straight jo is extremely effective. As you can see in the demo video, a strike or block or thrust will happen very fast. Serrations on the cane would only be to better maintain grip. One drill we do in class is to be blindfolded and use the cane as a tool to guide yourself forward. Then, an attacker from any random direction and speed tries to take the cane away. The defense is to maintain control of the cane and complete the circle by dispatching the attacker.
I also have a 4' stick. The extra length gives some extra versatility and reach, though Kukishin Ryu tends to use drifts or slides down the stick, as well as rolling (bofurigata.
I've been trying a variety of cane options. I recently made this one. It's an 1 1/4" oak dowl rod about 36" long. I fish mouthed the up right piece to fit the handle to. i used some two part epoxy and two 3" deck screws to fasten the two together. I added some athletic tape for grip.
I carry a tear drop cane master cane as it's lower profile and it gives a nice striking edge.
I've never trained in the Cane Master system but have a background in 15th century poleaxe, arming sword, messer, longsword and the 18th century British backsword. I can use the cane in a lot of ways.
I have recently started taking a Hapkido class. I will we taking the instructors weapons classes as he does them. He will be teaching a an Escrima(double stick) class at the end of the month. Then a knife class some time later. I will ask him about a cane fighting class soon. I will post any helpful knowledge in regards to type of cane, shapes, etc as I get it. I will post more if you want to hear about it. Here or PM me.
