Parked my car at the mouth of a local Canyon so I could go for a sufferfest bikeride. Came back to find the little corner window broken out and my car unlocked. Some subhuman pos broke into it during my 2 hour absence. Parking lot is off the main road but well traveled...
The target of thier curiosity appears to be my street clothes in the back seat. Best I can tell they rifled through my pants and gym bag looking for my wallet (hidden elsewhere). I think they took my leatherman, but I'll have to look again and see if it fell under the seat. Otherwise, there was nothing of value for them to take.
However, I'm going to be out $150 for the window....
Bastards!

Sorry for your aggravation. I have long felt that petty theives should be shot for no other reason than their lack of ambition

I understand (and sympathize with) someone who steals to eat, I understand why very valuable things or large amounts of $$$ are a temptation, but stealing small, petty, personal, loose stuff is beyond stupid and truly the act of vermin.

Maybe it wasn't a thief

Maybe the bears are getting more sophisticated. :uhoh:

It's happened to me, too, but in more urban "wilds". Maybe you can find a useable window at a salvage yard.

Same thing happened in front of my house yesterday. They got a small B.O.B. I had in the spare tire well, some sunglasses, and misc. crap. I guess I now have proof that having the el-cheapo factory stereo is worth it.

FYI - Seattle PD will not respond and will only take a report over the phone unless you have one of the following:
1. Greater than $1500 loss,
2. Attempted vehicle theft where vehicle will not run, or
3. Break in tools left behind.

Yea I filed a report via the phone as well. It appears they made off with my leatherman, for some reason. I guess they didn't want to leave empty handed. I'm considering diabling the trunk release button, and then I can place items in the trunk when the vehicle is unattended.
Insurance is going to cover the window. Still chaps my ass badly, though. I thought I did everything right, but by leaving my pants in plain view, I gave the thieves a target. Turns out I'm not stupid enough to leave my wallet in my pants, but they didn't know that until they'd broken my winder.

A friend had his stero stolen from his car. When he replaced it he Super Glued double edge razor blades to the back and sides. Next time it happens he wont have prints, He will have fingers

First rule and lesson learned here.... Don't leave anything in plain sight. If they can't see it, they usually will not waste time breaking in and taking a chance at getting caught...

Pants have pockets and they ass/u/me a wallet.... put it in a trunk or in case of SUV get a blanket that matches your carpet and place the item on the floor with the carpet over it...

Must been at little or big cottonwood canyon.....

Not smart. A thief in this day and age would likely win a large lawsuit for injuries sustained from the razor blades. Even if it never got stolen, what if he forgets he did that and sells the car. New owner decides to put in a new stereo for whatever reason and gets sliced. Another huge lawsuit waiting to happen.

While his sense of justice isn't lost on me, He is very likely going to get into a lot of trouble if that setup ever sees use. Not only could the scumbag sue, it may meet the definition of a booby trap, which (do I need to say it?) is illegal. ;)

Was this at one of the Cottonwood Canyons? It wouldn't surprise me...
At any rate, sorry for your loss. :(

Wes

It was Emigration Canyon, the parking lot on the SE corner, where the reycle dumpsters are.
Next time, I park in front of the Zoo.

Have it that nothing is in sight, nothing.

Have the loudest alarm in the world.

Try to park in a reasonably populated place. Not easy.

No razor blades.

We have a marked Security Vehicle, "Protective Division" reflective tape all over, seems to not attract thieves.

Go Back

I am sure your not the first person who has been ripped off in that lot. You should go back with a differant car and see if you can get the scumbags to show up. Most states will allow you to make a citizen arrest.

The razor blades on the radio is often done around here, being into car audio I have witnessed it firsthand. I've also seen people use cable through the radio housing, bolt sub boxes to the floor, use torx or other uncommon headed screws, as well as the antitheft fasteners you see in public restrooms.

Some people also supplement their car alarms with Extremely Painfully LOUD piezo sirens making it seriously painful to be in the car. When I get the funds I plan to install a paging alarm in my truck.

Okay, anecdote time....

First, sorry about the theft and loss you experienced. Please don't think the following story is to trivialize your situation. It's not...

I'm older than most of you and it will show.

Years ago I had my car legally parked outside an entrance to the Bronx Zoo in NYC. When my friend and I got back to the car, it was unlocked (easy to do those days with a mere screwdriver) and my 8-track player was stolen from under the dash (see, told you it would show!) and the perp left the screwdriver. We walked to a police station, which was right around the corner and I reported the theft.

The precinct station looked like a scene from the old Hill Street Blues show, chaos everywhere... Well, the desk sargeant, was much the Irish cop stereotype as he looked down at me, girnned a mile wide and said in an Irish accent, "So, they stole yer tape player did they? Yer lucky they didn't steal yer car!"

I looked at my friend, acknowledged what I just heard with a shrug, and we left. Funny thing is, I still have and use that screwdriver. That 8-track is long gone. Hey, I won. :p

I once knew a guy who did this. He had a real nice 69 Mustang and was really into stereos. His stereo was stolen 2x. After the second time, he did the superglue and razor thing. The third time, he came out, his stereo was gone, there was lots of blood all over the carpet. He told the police, but unfortunately the guy didn't cut himself badly enough to go to the hospital. Officer didn't comment about the liability issue, just chuckled a bit. Of course, this was about 10 years ago.

always turn the stereo down a few blocks before you park, WAY before if parking in a bad area.

hiding is great- this wont work for too many people but it was 5 years befroe they got the whole huge cd amp kicker system from my big truck- first 4 years, no locks on the doors, i live in a bad area, they took other stuff- but stereo was pushed back into the dash, buried. ugly old work truck, they never looked.

of course, once i got locks and started locking it, it gets broken into monthly , tools, stereo, everything. now theres nothing left to take so i hope the quit it soon.
