Carry Position Do You Change It Often Or Not?

Do you change position of where you carry?

  • I carry a handgun in any 'on my person' position that I choose at any particular time.

Do you regularly change the position in which you carry a handgun? I especially like to know where my firearm is at all times. Wearing it in the same place (or very limited number of places on my person) virtually all of the time assures I will always reach for it in the same place - and it will be there. I have heard too many stories of people reaching for a handgun on their person and then reaching again and sometimes again because they forgot where it was being worn that particular day. If I must carry it other than where I normally carry it, then I place it somewhere and practice drawing several times, with an unploaded gun, to make sure it sets into the old muscle memory. Hopefully the muscles will remember if under stress. I really believe though, it is best to always carry in the same position on your person if at all possible.

When I first started carrying the gun was much farther back, probably about 7:30 or so (I shoot lefty) but over my first year or so of carrying I slowly started moving it more forward for better concealment and less interferance from chairs, car seat side bolsters, etc. Now it's at about 9:10 or so.

It's a 1911 in case you're wondering.

as a lefty, i switch back and forth between left and right handed IWB holsters for a couple reasons.

also, how far forward and back it is usually depends on the pants i'm wearing, as belt loop positions vary, and i would rather have the holster secured in a different position, than unsecured in the same position

i won't argue with the 'keep it in the same place' logic though, to the extent that it's practical

Around The Clock

4 O'clock always or 12 O'clock in a fanny pack if the situation requires.

When carrying OWB, while driving I'll carry at about 3:00 for comfort and accessibility in the car.

When I get where I'm going, I slide the holster back to 4:30 or so for better concealment.

Of course, SmartCarry is always at 12:00, and I've never forgotten where it is.

Most of the time at 3:30 position with IWB holster.

Also carry a Derringer in opposite pocket from strong side. I may move that or the holstered gun to another position when in the car with seat belt fastened as I find it hard to draw belted in. Only other option I employ is a fanny pack holster from time to time.

I always carry in the same spot: 4 o' clock. I don't want to confuse my brain in a stressful situation and reach for a gun that is not there because I decided to carry differently that day.
