carrying a 'budget' gun?

S&W Sigma .40

It's accurate, didn't cost much, and it looks nice. No failures.

We should post a poll. If you carry a cheap gun do you also buy cheap tires? And how much is your life worth?

?

So because I carry a "cheap" gun (ie, my gun cost less than yours) I don't value my life as much as you do?
Or are you just making that snide comment because you're jealous that I (or anyone with a "cheap" gun) spent $300 or so less than you did for basically the same thing?

Or you were just joking and I read your post wrong.

some handguns are exensive and still poorly made with brand names. I like my pocket kel tec 380 P3AT and on my budget was not a cheap gun. . No less reliable than a Seecamp I sold

What does this mean? That you should carry a cheap/economy gun to defend your life with, because it'll be taken into evidence?
Cheap doesn't necessarily mean junk. Your XD example shows that (and other than the low power of 9x18 I'd say the Mak I had was 110% reliable).

I think the thinking is that you shouldn't carry a gun that you can't afford to replace because if something happens you will now be completely unarmed (and honestly AFTER shooting a dirtbag your life is probably in greater danger than before ... dirtbags have friends and family that are usually also dirtbags).

The question from the OP was:

"How many of you carry the so called 'budget' guns"

Turns out, lots of folks do...at least in their opinion. I got my Glock 27 for free, that makes it a bargain. Are going to claim it isn't a full caliber top of the line firearm? No...it was just a bargain *to me*.

I also carry a Kel-tec PF9...a *real bargain* in a CCW weapon...full service caliber, decent capacity and fully reliable in a more than adequately accurate package that fits in *my* front or back pocket. No one will convince me that there is a better deal out there...I have enough knowledge and experience to select my one tools.

Griping about someone else's choice is just Internet Special Olympics.

Kel Tec P11 I paid about $175 for in 1998 and have carried since then. I have other weapons as well, but I often find it simpler to slip the P11 inside the waistband via the hook attached to it than "strap up" to carry something like an XD45.

I work outside, so I lightly coat it in Ballistol every week or so. No rust here in sweaty NC summers since using the Ballistol.

Cheap, low maintenance, affordable ammo, decent caliber -- all works for me. YMMV.

normally i carry a kimber pro carry .45. but my backup is a cz 82. my cz might not be expensive but it is not cheep. it has been 100% reliable. as far as your prime carry gun i was told to get the best, most reliable gun you can afford. fortunately their are alot of affordable new & used firearms in which to chose. all the ones already metioned + some of the police trade-in's & surplus.

I carry a kel tec pf-9 or a CA 38 ultra lite both under 13oz empty and I shoot them quet a bit. maybe 6 to 800 rounds through each. Both have been 100%

Both my wife and I carry affordable guns. They are not cheap, they are exceptionally reliable. The bersa T380s are very accurate, easy to shoot, and completely reliable after 2000 through my wife's, and just over a thousand through mine. Also, we carry a P3AT. It too is very reliable. Not a range gun, but very reliable and concealable.

What does this mean? That you should carry a cheap/economy gun to defend your life with, because it'll be taken into evidence?
statements like that do not require or need any acknowledgment.

Taurus 709 slim Are there better guns? Probably Are there worse guns? Probably.
I wanted a single stack 9mm thin carry gun for summer. So far so good!
If it ever becomes unreliable, I'll never carry it again. 400 rounds w\out a hicup.
My others should be that good.

the only carry gun i have that isn't a ruger is my xd45 otherwise it a security six or p345 and if i'm feeling different i'll carry a p95DC..I've always considered ruger a "budget gun" with out ever feeling like its a cheap gun

"Griping about someone else's choice is just Internet Special Olympics."

Great line, Nasty! Applies to so much we see on line - not just here! Hope you don't mind me borrowing that one!

If I could prove to myself that one of those li'l phoenix 22's would be reliable...I would be tempted to carry it.

Mine is, and it's a lot of fun to shoot. I actually did carry it a few times when the Bersa wouldn't fit, and before I got the PF9, but it is remarkably heavy.. which is probably part of why it's so neat to shoot..

To some extent, suggestions, on what works in a gunfight from someone that has never been in one, is rather like the legal advice you get from the cashier at burger world. A combat vet can probably get alot closer to a good idea. But then firefights in combat are far different than what a police officer might encounter in a crowded urban area. Every gunfight is different. Worrying about what happens to your carry gun after the fact is minor. If it all pans out, you can always replace it, if it doesnt, you may end up using a knife in your next gunfight. My best advice is carry what you think the situation may dictate. Most civilian gunfights outside of LEO encounters consist of ONE round fired. Many times the gun coming out, is enough. Most bad guys are not interested in the blue book value of a weapon they see headed their way. Criminals fear an armed citizen for good reason. The minute they suspect their life is in danger, they usually head for higher ground. Let's just hope you never have to find out, how good, or bad, any of this advice is.
Have a great day

I carry budget guns quite often. I have a Keltec P32 that qualifies but more often than not its my S&W M38 J frame I bought for $200.00. The sweetest shooting and the gun I would choose if I had to make a money shot is a 4" M13 4" K frame it too was less than $300.00.

Cheapest gun I own that I carry sometimes is my cz-82. 13 rounds, great trigger, reliable as hell. Who cares that it's cheap milsurp?

I mix it up between the P64 and Slim until I can get a good holster for my Defender 90. I am not the slightest bit worried about any of them either as they have all been completely flawless. That P64 is amazingly accurate too..

Hello friends and neighbors // I don't carry a sub $300.00 handgun as EDC but my hiking handgun in the N.C. montains for years was a $65.00, Stoger Luger for emergencies.

It was all I had handgun wise, 11+1, .22, aluminum frame, 4" barrel still accurate and I picked it up used in 1983.

I'd still trust it any day and I think that is the main factor in a carry handgun.

Despite the cost of the firearm, if it has been [[ "proven/tested by you" ]] reliable, you shoot it accurately and you trust it, why not use it for a carry gun.

One of my hunting buddies is a crack shot with his Bersa thunder .380 and Ruger P95 9mm
I'd be more than glad to have him and his firearms watching my back.

All my guns are budget guns. I carry a Taurus 809 or 709 depending on the day. After playing Taurus QC dept and repair dept., both guns are very reliable.
