It looks like most soft cases I've looked for are 12" tall, which is enough for a flattop with optic, but not enough with a 30 round magazine inserted.

I'm trying to find a simple one that allows me to not have to remove the mag and collapse the stock all the way to fit in the case. I've got one for range work but for duty use I'd rather be able to just move the rifle from the case to my patrol car every day without having to mess with it.

It'll need to be about 13" tall and at least 34.5" long.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I think the Pelican cases are too shallow (or narrow, however you're looking at it) to fit without going to the really big cases like the 1770, which is for two rifles stacked atop each other. Otherwise, you're not going to have much foam on either side of the rifle if you need a full 13 inches.

For a hard case that's still fairly rugged, you could go with the Plano DLX series double rifle case. If you just want something inexpensive, the Plano SE double scoped rifle case should hold it. However, at that price, you'll probably get as much real protection as you will from one of the "tactical" soft cases like that PSA.

Yes, but at 12.5" tall as the exterior measurement, I don't think you're going to have more than 12" inside.

Again, that will fit a 20-round mag fine. Does it have to be a 30? Do you have to use issued magazines?

Bags & gear.....

Here are a few sources for gun cases & gear.
I like the discreet or low profile choices for weapons, .
My armed security instructor(a EP specialist & combat veteran) told our class he toted his M4s & gear in a bag with little league team patches on it.
He also said none of his neighbors know what he does & avoids gun industry logos, clothing, decals.

See: www.csmgear.com www.5.11tactical.com www.blackhawk.com www.galls.com www.uscav.com www.policehq.com www.midwayusa.com www.natchezss.com .

5.11 Tactical is very popular with "operators" & armed professionals. Blackhawk was started by a retired SEAL who disliked the kits & gear bags used during his specwar service.

Not sure how tall the aimpoint is, but here is a picture of my AR with 30rnd mag and carry handle on a flat top. The mag is all the way at the bottom of the case. There is a little more than 3/4 an inch of space left.

This is the PSA carry case.

I agree, but look at the pictures. If that's a full sized AR (and I don't know why they'd have a miniature), it has a 30 round magazine and plenty of room to spare with the optic installed. I can't quite make out what it is, but the Aimpoint shouldn't be significantly taller.

Have you actually measured the 13" height, or is that an estimate?

That's what I'm afraid of, although a couple guys on another forum own the TT bag and they have no issues with a similar setup rifle and a 30 rounder; although not the exact setup. Perhaps there's a little stretch involved. With a tape measure my carbine is 12 1/4" tall. I just threw out the 13" figure to be on the safe side.

I'm just used to 30 rounders as that's what I have on my plate carrier as well. I understand some guys go with a 20 rounder as the first mag for easier maneuverability but I've always trained with the 30's and am comfortable with them.

Maxxhavoc, thanks for the photo. It looks like it'll be a tight squeeze but it may work. I guess it's not that big of a deal to insert/drop a mag daily. The bag is extra enticing as they have a deal with 6 PMags and the bag for $89!
