CCI SV at 500+ yards

Here is another of his videos talking about the difference between sub sonic and high velocity 22LR at 300 yards. This video sure has caused some heated arguments on Rimfire Central and Sniper's Hide forums.

Cool video. I wish I had a spot of my own to shoot 300 yards like that!

Stay safe.

I tried a similar thing when I first got my Marlin 60 running, but only at 100 yards. I was looking for drop differences between CCI SV, CCI MM, and Aguila Interceptor. The SV shot the best group, followed by the Interceptor, then MM. However the groups sizes were very close and I think there is a good chance the sizes would change relative to one another if I repeated the test a few times. I don’t shoot interceptor in that gun any more so I won’t be doing that again.

I like the videos, they're well thought out.

Furthest I've ever shot a .22LR "for real" has been 300 meters at a silhouette match. I have been working my latest acquisition out to 300yds getting ready to start NRL 22 matches.

I do take note that the .22LR manufacturers that are catering to the .22LR long range crowd market long range .22 LR ammo for that purpose that's subsonic:

Lapua .22LR Long Range = 1106 FPS
Lapua .22LR Super Long range = 1106FPS

SK .22LR Long range Match = 1099

I suspect it's due to level of consistency they're trying to achieve. I've had supersonic stuff that shot well, but over a chrono the highs/lows were pretty dramatic. Meanwhile, the Lapua LR match stuff has an SD 0f 6 and SK LR Match an SD 0f 7.

So I dunno, maybe things work differently down under?

Our rifle range has a huge berm behind it at 220-225 yard and it contains lots of small cliche rocks. I will admit to shooting rocks on it when I get bored and even manage to hit some of them. It's iffy enough from wind and mirage that I am not interested in any longer distances.

I wonder what the difference is from regular match ammo; it is subsonic and consistent, too.

200 is as far as I've shot at paper. I place clay targets on a dirt bank at about 225 and there used to be a steel plate at 250. I've only used CCI Mini-Mag 36 gr HP ammo at the longer ranges with good success. I found slower target ammo to be slightly better at 50-100 yards, but the flatter trajectory of the 36 gr ammo has worked better for me past 100.

Conventional wisdom says it should not, but that is my experience. For me it was about running out of scope adjustment before getting to 200 yards with slower ammo. I've not tried to go past 250 and can't imagine 500. I'm dealing with about 4' of bullet drop at 250 vs 50.

It's not uncommon for even really good rimfire ammo to have a velocity spread of 30 FPS. In a 40 grain bullet at 500 yards, what does that translate to in vertical spread on target? He was shooting CCI Standard which is likely to show closer to 50-60 FPS in velocity spread. That is going to make a huge difference at 500.

If crosswind was estimated at 4 MPH, but it was 5, what difference does that make in horizontal spread on target?

What are the dimensions of the target?

I was at a friends range sighting in an old Weaver k3 or k 2.5. Once I had it dialed in he asked me if I could hit his target at 200 yards. I knew I could if I could get the elevation correct. I shot 15 times and he sent his grandson to retrive the target. It had 15 holes and not a bad group for offhand.
