Charles Dailey-v- Argentine Hi-Power

Just checking,


A NIB Charles Dailey with one ten rnd mag $425 out the door.
A "rearsenalled" (sp) Argentine Hi-Power $350 with shipping, tax and something for the FFL guy.

My first guess is that NIB anything is gonna be better than redone stuff; unless the redone thing is WAY better to start with. Any input? I really feel the need of a new 9mm.

Well I have as much exposure to the CD as many others.......NONE! But most of the parts are FEG.....which means its not bad. What I can tell you is the FM/Argen. guns Ive seen have been pretty good guns. The fit and finish wasnt that good......slide/frame fit is more like a ww2 1911.

For about the same money Id take the CD over the FM guns Ive seen......no question.

The Charles Daly has no appeal for me. That glowworm sight just annoys me. The CD is the Hungarian FEG for $200.00 more. The Argentine is a FN MKII without the lightening cuts on the slide. Quality is there. The ones I have seen were good pistols. I would buy two Argentine FN manufacture pistols myself.

Josey, It seems you have a soft spot in your gun heart for guns made in that part of the world.................thats cool.

I remember when you posted that you had better experiences with a Llama 1911 over your Springfield on the 1911 forum.

The Argentine guns are "FM" as to the Belgian made "FN" guns.

They made them during and after the patent/contract for FN had run out.
My suspicion and concern with the Argentine guns is after the FN/Browning contract ran out, it seems that with very little supervision the quality of the materials/finished product may have suffered.

To each his own...........Id still take the CD over the soft steel versions Ive played with. Id take an FEG over the FM's Ive seen. But they may have been bad examples of a "once upon a time" great gun. You never know.

I like the Express sights on the Daly and it has better grips. All for not much more. If you don't like the express sights, I'd go with the other gun. I'd bet they are of similar quality although the Daly is still in its teething period.

I would like to get a cd hi power after the teething problems are over, and I actually get a chance to see one in person. Seems like a nice idea, and gives me a chance to own a hi power clone before Im able to get a browning and customize it. I like the hammer and the express sight, I just wonder if they will start selling the express 24/7 night sights as a option.

it was my understanding that FN surplused the MKII Hi-Power tooling and that FM bought same, A Argentine pistol is made with good steel. The Hafdasa, Ballester-Molina and Colt Sistema 1927s attest to that. The Argentines simply dropped the slide lightenening cuts to speed production. I did have excellent service from my Llama MAX-1 45 ACP. I had a POJ from Springfield Armory, it was made in Brazil. Same part of the world. Colt had a contract with Astra to manufacture Jr. 25 ACPs. I don't discriminate. I love diversity! I have Polish Radoms, Spanish Stars and Llamas, Russian Baikal shotguns and even a few German and Italian CAS pistols. Winchesters ARE Made In Japan, right?

I'd probably say neither. I'd rather look for a FEG. The Charles Daly is just a rebadged FEG with a better finish, and that is not worth twice the price in my opinion. To me, they're essentially the same thing. If you're going to pay that price, I'd just look for a deal on a real Browning or FN.

However, if you've got a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket, and if you don't want to look for a FEG, you might just want to go with a Charles Daly (after the initial production niggles are worked out, of course.)

The problems I've had can be read about elsewhere, but all of the problems I've encountered I've been able to fix myself. It's a good simple design, especially if you want to tinker.

I own and love them both.

Either of them are well worth it.

The CD has some nice modern features and the Argentine is a heck of a well made shooter and mine at least is accurate beyond belief.

I have held my Browning next to the CD and they appear identical. The owner of the shop has declined to allow disassembly of the new pistol for comparison, (I guess I can understand that rule). The grips are black rubber on the CD and the safety lever is longer and easier to manipulate. I have not had a chance to examine one of the Argentine pistols. That is a factor, I have bought a Star 9mm sight unseen and it was "OK", but this is more than double the price and I hesitate to commit. Once I order it I pretty much have to buy it 'cause I just can not stick the guy who has the FFL with a gun I don't like. That is part of the reason he only charges me $10 for running the paperwork.

Maybe I can swing it to where I can buy both. I love the BHP but I don't want holster wear on mine. Oh, I just realized I'd not mentioned that I'm going to CCW whichever I buy. Does that change anyones thinking?

I've not seen a CD, but my Argentine FM Hi-Power is a great little pistol. I bought mine in the days when they were pretty cheap (about $225, as I recall).

I think the Browning can't be beat, but next in line would be the FEG in my book. I have an FEG that has been a GREAT shooter, every bit as good as my Browning.

Just got back from a gun show today, and had a chance to handle the Charles Daly. Once you get past the rollmark Its not bad, with the ergonomics and the quality of fit and finish to be rather nice. I wasnt allowed to dry fire it, so I dont know how the trigger was, but besides that I liked the gun a lot. If I had a chance to find one with the 24/7 night sights, Id be all over it.(Plus if I had the four hundred dollars )
