"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived."
-General George S. Patton, Jr.

As expected, even in death, this national treasure is disrespected. This article is a perfect example of that. It paints him, in a not so subtle way, as a racist and right wing type; It talks about how he was against affirmative action, etc, and ignores the fact he put his career on the line for civil rights and equal rights, and was one of the very few actors of the time and put his money where his mouth was on equal rights for blacks. He campaigned for John F. Kennedy…

How many people know he marched with Martin Luther King, and accompanied King to many of his later speeches way before it was fashionable to do so and at great risk to his person an career?

How many people know in 1961, on learning the premier his movie was segregated, he joined a picket line outside the theater. That’s just a short list of this mans support for equal rights that have been ignored in favor of painting him as a conservative “gun nut” racist who was president of the NRA.

Heston was a man who was for human rights, equal rights, and Liberty and Freedom for all, and unlike those that give lip service to the concept, put his money where his mouth was at a time that it was not trendy to do so and was a potential career killer for him, and physically dangerous to his person (he received death threats for his support of King and civil rights).

It is beautiful irony that he died on the 40th Anniversary of King’s death, and perhaps the two are reunited some place.

RIP, you national treasure.

Willbrink, I didn't know about his work with the Civil Rights movement, thank you.

As for not supporting affirmative action, I see that point. Any man should be allowed to make it on his own merit, not put into a position because of a quota.

I'll have to make it the really good stuff when I raise my glass to his memory tonight.

In June 1998, Heston was elected president of the National Rifle Association, for which he had posed for ads holding a rifle. He delivered a jab at then-President Clinton, saying, "America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns."

Amen. A truly great American!

"Willbrink, I didn't know about his work with the Civil Rights movement, thank you."

That's because it is ignored in favor of attempting to paint him as a racist "gun nut." How many of the Liberal media, actors, and anti gun/anti freedom politicians have, or ever would, do what he did in the time he did it? None, that's how many. MLK, Heston, those were true men of human rights and for equal rights for all.

I remember Heston was stumping for a film his son, Fraser, had produced and done the screenplay for, called "Mother Load". Fraser played the baby Moses in "Ten Commandments, BTW."

Long story short, Heston came by the station to promote it. This was in the early '80's. I got him to do some promo lines for WOAI, and still recall standing about 2 feet from him (me with headphones on) recording that voice! He knew it was an experience for me, and was very gracious saying "Happy Birthday" to my Mom and some other things. After seeing all the movies and to spend quality time with the man was a true gift

We spent a few minutes talking guns. I never forgot that. This prior to his association (holding office) with the NRA. He never came across as the "star" he was. Just a man with a job to do and a passion for firearms.

The people here disrespecting him after his passing only magnifies the difference between Mr. Heston and themselves.

RIP.... He was an inspiration

The book he wrote called "Letters to my grandchildren" really showed what a great person he was.

When I was a kid, my parents being the religious types that they are brought home this movie called "Ben Hur". After watching it my appreciation for the cinema arts was kindled.

Rest in peace Mr. Heston. Most men can only dream of living such a life.

Was just talking about this with my Dad the other day when he mentioned he heard Heston was in bad shape. We were reminiscing about the 1998 NRA Convention in Philadelphia where we were lucky enough to sit no more than 15 feet from Heston when he gave his speech. Definitely a remarkable man.

RIP :(

At a Time Warner stockholders meeting, he castigated the company for releasing an Ice-T album that purportedly encouraged cop killing.

Heston wrote in "In the Arena" that he was proud of what he did "though now I'll surely never be offered another film by Warners, nor get a good review in Time. On the other hand, I doubt I'll get a traffic ticket very soon."

The man stood up for his beliefs, regardless of the political climate. If anyone could say as much of me, I'd be honored. May he enjoy his long-earned rest.

There is video of The Man saying sexist things at an NRA gathering.

Woah, ironclad evidence. There is probably some video of me saying something sexist somewhere as well. Probably 99% of the men who walk the Earth have said something sexist at one time or another. Women too. I bet you did as well. I guess everyone is sexist.

Maybe we can judge a man by how he lived and what acts he performed instead of what he said at a party once... at least I can.
