All AK's are "low quality" if you want to call it that. They're meant to fit together loose and shake rattle and roll. If you want it to look and feel like an M4, it's the wrong gun for you. I've messed with some higher end AK's and all you gain is better fit and finish. They won't last longer, shoot better, or be more reliable. They're sure as heck not worth 2-3 times the price

The only real advantage to the high- end black rifle Arsenal AKs is the heat shield, which allows you to fire the weapon without burning your fingers off after shooting 100 rounds through it. Otherwise you get the same sensation of the AK sloshing its guts around whenever you pull the trigger.

I just want to see the days where milsurp was $100 for a 1200 round tin and you could buy centerfire specials for $200 come back.

Wishful thinking... :(

I'd like to see the ban lifted on Chinese imports, so we could see some more of their AKs and surplus ammo imported.

To the OP:

Why would you want to spend $800 on an AK when you can get one for $300? My WASR10 was $400 and no its not the prettiest gun out of the box but after cleaning the gun and rubbing it down with windex it looks alot better now. AK's are designed to be a fighter out of the box and run without requiring any MX on the battlefield - so yeah they are going to look kind of ugly at first but try it out with wood furniture, clean it up, love it, buy the add-ons if you want and it will turn into a comfortable pair of shoes. After just one shoot my Wasr feels alot different and looks cleaner (they come very dirty from the factory, literally)

I have good luck with Monarch (Barnaul?)-- in Dallas it is the only "cheap" 7.62x39 avail-- and that is at Academy (of course)-- it runs $5.69 a box...long gone are the days of $2.99 Wolf MC.. 8*( But besides being FMJ, the Monarch feeds way better and I have had less problems with it than Wally World Winchester or Remington-- which run about $14 per/20...

I did get a deal late last year on Barnaul boxed 7.62 for $2.50 a box at the local gunshop on clearance-- I bought the last 6 or 7 boxes... and I novemebr of last year Dick's had Wolf MC for $3.99 a box-- I bought the last 10 or so boxes they had of that..

Since then, Monarch has been the cheapest I can find..

FWIW Afghani mujahadeen have passed down 40 year old AKs that were built with hand tools in a cave in Kyhber pass. The weapon was designed to be able to be slapped together from the worst of materials in the worst conditions and still work.

A WASR is a little rougher around the edges than an Arsenal, but will shoot just as well for just as long. Also the quality control of WASR's has greatly improved in recent years.
Yeah--mine was $400 summer of 2008-- its not as finely finished as some, but it has been a great trooper on the range. It has given me almost no problems-- and maybe through a couple of thousand rounds or so, I have had maybe one or 2 FTF/FTE--- It was a spur of the moment buys, and I don't regret it. Probably won't sell it-- even though I was offered $800+ in "the scare" and even last week I was offered $700-- probably should have taken it, but mine is a known quantity, and sometimes 'the grass aint greener"..so I give a +1 for the WASR 10..here is mine...

Steel case ammo rusts because it is steel. Brass tarnishes instead of rusting but you can usually just wipe that off unless it is really bad. Biggest thing with 545 is it is lighter per round, lower recoil, and tends to shoot flatter than the x39. However x39 hits harder at longer ranges with 122 gr than 545s 55-70gr and it is more available than 545. I believe most 545 is around 55gr. 545 is similar to 556 though not the same. I wouldn't feel undergunned with 545. I have an AK in 556/223 and several in 7.62x39 and prefer the 556 hands down. I am working on getting a 545 and if it shoots as good as 556 I will probably prefer it over x39 too, but that remains to be seen.
