Why would you want to spend $800 on an AK when you can get one for $300? My WASR10 was $400 and no its not the prettiest gun out of the box but after cleaning the gun and rubbing it down with windex it looks alot better now. AK's are designed to be a fighter out of the box and run without requiring any MX on the battlefield - so yeah they are going to look kind of ugly at first but try it out with wood furniture, clean it up, love it, buy the add-ons if you want and it will turn into a comfortable pair of shoes. After just one shoot my Wasr feels alot different and looks cleaner (they come very dirty from the factory, literally)

Don't know where you are finding new AK's for $300 either. I searched for one for Son's B-Day and ended up at $369 for WASR 10. Felt PRETTY good bout that. I'l take 12 @$300 please. Granted it had 3 mags, bayo, sling, oiler and all the other happy horse****.
