I have decided to build a AR as to learning the workings of the rifle. Spikes lower,LPK from AIM. Tapco M4 stock donated from a friend. minus castle nut and backing plate. Can you buy those separate? Anyway I'm conifent on building the lower but was looking for suggestions on a reliable complete upper for <400 or so. thanks Deadeye

there are a few outh there for 400 even.
Look at del-ton, RRA, CMMG, Stag Arms.

They are considered lower tier, but from what I have been reading they should be fine.

Palmetto State Armory has been getting good reviews from what I have seen and they have uppers for $399.

I'm sure you can get every part you would need to build the gun. I use MidwayUSA a lot and I would presume they would have all the miscellaneous parts you need.

+1 for delton or DPMS uppers, i lone the two dpms i have. also look at plumcrazy lowers. i just got my complete for 153.00 from a local pawnshop. lifetime warranty on them.

PSA is my go to store. If they don't have what i need i also use MidwayUSA, Brownells and Primary Arms.

During Palmetto State Armory's father's day sale lowers were $49.95, complete lower M4 kit $99.99 and complete upper with 14.5" 1/7 4150 chrome lines barrel and their best bolt carrier group for $399.99. Total $549.93 + shipping and maybe taxes. I have to pay taxes since I live in SC. Here's my PSA build. I've built 2 ARs from PSA so far and ordered 2 more lowers during the father's day sale. Why .. I don't know.. because I wanted them. Sorry if I there was some confusion of the price of the AR pictured. The cost of this one was around $590.00 minus the Lucid and MI ERS buis not counting shipping, taxes and transfer fee.

1+ for the slip ring and Lucid.

One significant issue is shipping costs. A vendor may have something that's the absolute cheapest around, but another could bundle it and save on shipping an assembly. It's the front door cost after the big truck drives away that counts.

Another area is avoiding upgrade fever - the pics are a good example of furniture costs that appear frugal, but honestly, even Magpul replacement gear costs more than issue. And when you can get used issue, it's even less - sometimes free if your buddies or a forum has it in a trading section.

A2 grips are in such low demand they are given away to clear off the bench. Shop forum "classifieds," you can find flat slip rings for $2, or M4 carry handle rear sights for $32 - much cheaper than any BUIS, and easy to chop for scope clearance.

Then there's the uberfrugal - who says you are required to use a FA or ejection port cover? Not to get one running, and considering most other combat weapons don't have one, it's arguable. For a light duty gun, you can save the bucks, and one vendor does sell a lower priced model exactly that way.

Getting a military parts kit with inspected, all GI issue and "tested" parts can be cheap, too. It's a lot more common than we think - ever met someone who never bought a used car? Well, the rest of us do and enjoy the savings.

There is economic sense in purchasing an upper complete, the vendors get a break from retail buying uppers and barrels by the hundreds, and those savings do get passed on. The important point is being able to move quickly when they are found - LAR had blem uppers on sale for $48 earlier this year, and you had to find it and know who to call to get in line. It lasted less than 10 days. One thread to check is the cheap parts at the arfcom Build It yourself forum, which is stickied specifically for that kind of deal.

Tirod you are absolutely right on making a budget Frankenstein build. When I built my first AR I did exactly what you are advising. I built a Dissipator and it has parts from all over the place but they are quality parts and ended up with a nice dependable AR. Don't be in a hurry but when you see a great deal jump on it or it'll be gone.

I'm building a dissipator, too, and getting the barrel maker to attach the FSB is money ahead. They have the tools, expertise, and know exactly what part to order.

Me, I've spend $45 more on drill bits, stones, and stumbled over unexpected issues. I could have bought a clamp on sight and been finished for the same money. There are some things easily done building an AR, and you don't need special tools for most of it. But, mess with getting a GI FSB where you want it, expect it to be very educational, and budget double.

Drilling and grinding forged steel, and getting it aligned to sight in properly is not an easy task, requires upper level skills, patience, and some expensive tools if used on a one-time basis.

As for the rest of it - vice grips with taped jaws insert roll pins, used drill bits can tap in and center them, the front push pin can install it's detent, a pair of channel lock pliers can tighten down the barrel nut.

Pinning the FSB to the barrel, you need a jig, expensive bits, a drill press, and experience to pin one on. Just clamp it if it's a recreational gun. There's $50 saved right there one way or another.

Another $50 saved is a milspec flash hider, $8, all the aftermarket ones are no less than $50 plus shipping. Upgrades are exponentially expensive for the incremental return.

I just got my wife a new camera and when I get it charged I'll take some pics of my Dissipator. I didn't go through fitting the barrel and etc. I bought a Bushmaster barrel assembly and installed it. If I remember right the hardest thing was getting the rear sight on the A2 upper installed or was it the pin and spring for the front upper to lower assembly pin? Little sucker went across the room several times.

I hope this isn't considered a hijack but this is my Frankenstein Dissipator that I built over a long period of time shopping around for the lowest price parts. Still all the parts are of good quality.

Thanks all for your recommendations, suggestions, tips and tricks. The 100.00 PSA complete lower M-4 caught my attention but could not find it on a quick search on a break. Looks like I have to start checking all your input. Thanks again, deadeye

Take a look at DSA. They have a M4 type upper for $275. Non chrome lined. No carrying handle.

+Whatever for Delton, they are great price/performance.

While I have no personal experience with them, most of the tools over on the BRF are all gaga over BCM.

This is a smitty stripped lower built with a Delton Middy upper and parts kit with some bonus features added after the build.

Get a Delton kit with an M16 bolt. It is a better system that some twice that cost. That low tier classification some portray is false.
Make sure you get the build billet or have someone experienced putting together for you. All mil spec.
Stack the castlenut too.
Cheers.

Honestly, if you are looking at building a basic rifle, just go buy one of the multiple complete $600 rifles out there, have a warranty, and be ahead. You aren't going to learn much building a lower. It's a few push pins, lining up a few springs, screwing in a screw or two, and the calling it a day. Buying a complete upper gives you the experience of pushing two pins. If you have a specific design you want to end up with, buy individual parts that fit your desires. If you want a budget AR, I'd get a S&W Sport at $600. With a mag and with a rear sight.

If you have the lower already (couldn't tell from the first post if you had any parts on hand already), then I'd probably go Del-ton. Right now they have a full page ad in shotgun news with a handful of different options that will be 10% off with the code on the page. Should get you with a complete upper shipped for around $400, assuming you don't pick any options.

spikes tactical has stripped lowers for $99, and a delton kit is only $465, so that puts you at a total of $564 (before taxes and shipping) for a brand new rifle. I just build my 20" rifle that way, and it's great. the trigger is garbage, but it's great for a upgrade-as-you-go rifle.
