I'm pretty sure the paratrooper (in its original configuration, without a detachable magazine) is legal in CA. I don't believe you can have a bayonet on them. It is a handy size. I have one and like it. Unfortunately, they aren't easy to find or cheap. All SKSs are pretty expensive in CA compared to other states (since the cheap Yugos can't be brought into the state without having the grenade launcher removed or altered). I think the Paratroopers are one of the harder variations to find. I believe they were made for the U.S. commercial market (not for real paratroopers), so there probably isn't much historic interest, but they are a handy size (similar to an AK, as shown in the photo above). If I found a decent paratrooper for $150, I'd buy it in a moment. I'd probably buy another at $250 (which is what I paid for the one I have). I don't think $300 (or even more) would be outrageous. I guess its supply and demand - you might luck into a good deal, but I wouldn't count on finding a cheap paratrooper in CA.
