i just bought a chinese sks at a show. PERFECT condition all around. i would guess it has never seen any sort of service...all matching serials too. i was reading an article about a "paratrooper" model of the sks.....the article was not terribly informative. the only detail i remembered was that supposedly these weapons have the sling side-mounted, which mine indeed does. if then this is a "paratrooper" model, is there anything else that distinguishes it from standard models?

To my knowledge, the "Paratrooper" and "Cowboy's Companions" were standard ChiCom SKS specimens with the barrels (and, in the Paratrooper's case, the spike bayonet) shortened to form handy carbines to appeal to the shooters in the USA.

They also weren't service rifles. They were commercially produced for shooters in the U.S.

I added a couple inches of length back to mine with a bling, bling flash hider.

I have one of these rifles. But my example does not have anykind of provision for a bayonette, it alao has a factory scope mounting rail in the LH side of the reciever.

The "Paratrooper" was a name given to standard SKS rifles that had the barrels cut down to 16" and the bayonets shortened by Midwest Ordnance in the mid 1980's. Midwest Ordnance bought repesentatives from China Jing An(a Chinese export/import company) to the US to show them their techniques for the mfg. of the Paratrooper and also how they converted SKS rifles to use AK mags. The first Chinese mfg. Paratrooper and Sporter model SKS(uses AK mags) rifles were imported to the US in 1988.

The SKS Paratrooper was my very 1st rifle and like an idiot, I traded it off...
Cool gun.
I put the 20-rd. mag on it and it never worked right. Should've left the standard mag on the gun.
I had it all stripped down and cleaned, all ready for a refinish on the stock and then decided to trade it off for something else.
Learned a lesson that day...:banghead:

A lot of chinese SKS have side rear sling swivels (as do all Albanian SKS). All SKS have a front sling loop on the side of the gas block.carlrodd said:

There are also a couple variations of Chinese SKS that take detachable AK mags. These may have either a 16" or 20" barrel but neither are actual "Paratrooper" models.
And as was said before, the Chinese never issued a Para model SKS. Only 20" barreled SKS were used by the Chicom military.

I've got a Paratrooper and a "Sporter" (SKS with a mag well to accept AK type mags).
I think the Sporter is relatively rare, so I leave that one be...
However, if you want a great truck gun, the paratrooper is a nice one.

I have found, though, it will only really hold 18 or 19 rounds.
I like the design of the magazine follower and spring, too. This thing will NOT take a set. I left the magazine loaded for a couple of years once, then decided to go to the range with it. I decided not to unload the magazine, just fire it out empty, no problem!
