i just bought a chinese sks at a show. PERFECT condition all around. i would guess it has never seen any sort of service...all matching serials too. i was reading an article about a "paratrooper" model of the sks.....the article was not terribly informative. the only detail i remembered was that supposedly these weapons have the sling side-mounted, which mine indeed does. if then this is a "paratrooper" model, is there anything else that distinguishes it from standard models?

To my knowledge, the "Paratrooper" and "Cowboy's Companions" were standard ChiCom SKS specimens with the barrels (and, in the Paratrooper's case, the spike bayonet) shortened to form handy carbines to appeal to the shooters in the USA.

Mine, it has sling loops on the side and bottom. Notice that the barrel is very short compared to regular models. This was made in 1967.

Did the Red Chinese Army have partroopers in the 50's and 60's?

IIRC, the Chicom's never used the Paratroopers in the army. These were soley developed for export to the USA. They (refering to China) used the standard size SKS such as the Russian, Yugo, Romanian...etc. to which they made their own. The Norinco SKS Paratrooper was never used in the army.

I have one of these rifles. But my example does not have anykind of provision for a bayonette, it alao has a factory scope mounting rail in the LH side of the reciever.

The "Paratrooper" was a name given to standard SKS rifles that had the barrels cut down to 16" and the bayonets shortened by Midwest Ordnance in the mid 1980's. Midwest Ordnance bought repesentatives from China Jing An(a Chinese export/import company) to the US to show them their techniques for the mfg. of the Paratrooper and also how they converted SKS rifles to use AK mags. The first Chinese mfg. Paratrooper and Sporter model SKS(uses AK mags) rifles were imported to the US in 1988.

The SKS Paratrooper was my very 1st rifle and like an idiot, I traded it off...
Cool gun.
I put the 20-rd. mag on it and it never worked right. Should've left the standard mag on the gun.
I had it all stripped down and cleaned, all ready for a refinish on the stock and then decided to trade it off for something else.
Learned a lesson that day...:banghead:

Just saw another

Got mine in 91 for about $120. I saw one at a show today for $350 - a nonsense price in my book, but it was in great condition. A FEW were made for Ak mags - these I would spend $350 for easy. (As long as they fed right).

A lot of chinese SKS have side rear sling swivels (as do all Albanian SKS). All SKS have a front sling loop on the side of the gas block.

The way to tell a Chinese "Paratrooper" is it has a fixed 10 round mag and a 16" barrel. Otherwise it's identical to a standard Chinese SKS which has a 20" barrel.

There are also a couple variations of Chinese SKS that take detachable AK mags. These may have either a 16" or 20" barrel but neither are actual "Paratrooper" models.

And as was said before, the Chinese never issued a Para model SKS. Only 20" barreled SKS were used by the Chicom military.

I've got a Paratrooper and a "Sporter" (SKS with a mag well to accept AK type mags).
I think the Sporter is relatively rare, so I leave that one be...

However, if you want a great truck gun, the paratrooper is a nice one.

both of my sling loops are mounted on the side, but the barrel is defo standard length, not 16"

My 20 round mag didn't work either. I played with it, got to looking, and the cartridges were hanging up on the lip where the bottom of the part that goes in the gun protrudes into the cover part that locks over it. I took a dremel tool and knife edged this part where the cartridges would slide over the lip of the inner part smoothly and now the thing is 100% feeding reliable and jam proof. I'd thought for a bit that I'd wasted the money on that magazine, but now I love it. It feeds with 10 round stripper clips just like the smaller one. I have found, though, it will only really hold 18 or 19 rounds.

I like the design of the magazine follower and spring, too. This thing will NOT take a set. I left the magazine loaded for a couple of years once, then decided to go to the range with it. I decided not to unload the magazine, just fire it out empty, no problem! :D

Hey, you can always buy another SKS.
