I'm asking if anyone has encountered problems with the Chip McCormick Shooting Star magazine? My brother ordered two and neither one would lock the slide open after the last round was fired. This malfunction happened in three different pistols, a Colt Commander,Remington 1911 and a Taurus PT 1911. My brother contaced Chip McCormick and returned the magazines. Two other Shooting Star magazines were sent as replacements. The replacement magazines would not seat unless the magazine release button was held in and the magazine inserted. Again my brother contacted Chip McCormick and told them the problem and stated he did not have any faith in the Shooting Star magazines, so Chip McCormick replaced them with two new Power Mags.

So as stated above has anyone else encountered problems with the Chip McCormick "Shooting Star Magazines??

I've had a couple of the shooting stars fail to slide lock as well.

But only after many full to empty cycles and leaving them fully loaded for an extended period.

I believe power mags are an improvement.

There are lots and lots of folks on this forum that have great experiences with CMC Shooting Stars. However, Shooting Star mags are the "economy" mags in the Chip McCormick line-up. The other thing to consider is they are a flush fit mag. They put 8 rounds in the same tube length others put 7. The PowerMag is a slightly longer tube and has a stronger spring than the Shooting Stars.

I haven't had good luck with flush fit 8 rounders regardless of the maker.

I have three "Shooting Star" 8 rnd mags that I shot Bullseye for 10 years with w/o problems. Of course, I only loaded them with 5 rounds each for competition. I don't recall any failures to slide lock but that wasn't a very high stress situation and if it should have happened, quickly remedied in the time allowed.
I still use them for casual shooting.

I've thought for a while that the mag springs seem weak in the Shooting Star mags, for the failure to lock the slide back issue that you mentioned.

My shooting stars have worked in all three of my 1911s. However, I went to the power mags anyway, because I liked the smaller, integral base pad instead of screwing on the big honkin' piece of plastic to the bottom of the shooting stars.

I purchased five Shooting Star mags a few years ago and every one works as it should from both a Kimber Classic Custom and RIA using primarily reloads.

No problems here.

I forgot to mention, I wouldn't run the Shooting Stars in an aluminum or other lightweight alloy gun. The followers (at least on mine) are not skirted, and can flop forward from the friction of the last round sliding off, and possibly ding the frame's feed ramp. Not an issue on steel, but it might be a problem on lightweight alloy. And I've never tested this to be sure, it's just my speculation, FWIW.

How many rounds would you estimate you have through them? The mag springs just don't seem to last as long for me.

I've used the CMC shooting stars for years and they have never given me any trouble in any of my 1911s. I prefer the flush fit bottoms.
