I bought 2 new magazines for my Colt Government Model 1911, 45acp. On of them is a Wilson Combat and the other is a Chip McCormick. The same problem exists no matter which of the 2 new magazines I try to use in my gun.

When I got the first new magazine and had this problem, I though it was an aberration. Then I got the 2nd new magazine (Wilson) and had the same problem. I don't have this issue with any of my older magazines, 2 Colts and 1 Chip McCormick.

Any ideas, thoughts?

Slightly re-contour and polish the mag catch where the mag goes over it when inserted.

If you have any other mags that work right, compare them to the new ones, looking at the size and shape of the mag release notch, and taking measurements (like circumference, etc. You may find something subtly different. (I wouldn't mess with making changes to the mag until you're SURE you know the cause.)

With some guns I've owned, when I've screwed the grip screws in too tightly it affected how easily the mags dropped free. (This is a bigger problem with some wooden and some rubber grips than others.)

Colt is notorious for not beveling their mag catch as much as many other makers. Thirty years ago I had the same problem, and took the gun to an "authorized Colt repair center", because my Colt 1911 mags didn't seat as easily as my S&W 4506 mags did. I gave the gun to the guy behind the counter and told him the problem. He took the gun in one hand, the mag in the other, and slapped it into the mag well. It seated perfectly. He said, "they've only been making them like that for the past 70 years (this was in the 1980's).

I think of it as closing the car door. You don't slam it, but you can't close it with one finger, you need some momentum behind it.

Regarding magazines, neither Wilson (47 Series, though the ETM's do) or McCormick put a bevel on the top of their mag tubes to aid in clearing the mag catch. Their tubes are perfectly straight and don't help the issue. However, Wilson's ETM line and CheckMate put a dimple on the top of their mag tubes to help with this issue.

Let me add, a fully loaded mag, with some momentum, is a whole lot easier to seat than an empty mag with no momentum.

The issue depicted in the video is not a problem. Seat the mags firmly and if they lock securely when you do that, it's working as designed.

I find that with some regularity between varying magazines. Keep inserting-removing, they will be fine. The manufacturing variances will go away as the catch and frame slides across them. Mine have these wear marks on the tubes and they slide in smoothly. No need to be gentle with them. 1911-magazine-tube-June 16, 2018-6368.jpg
