Choosing the right 223 Ammo

A chart I happened upon.
I don't know who came up with that chart, but my experience has been that a 9 twist is in its best with 69 grain or other weights of comparable length. My 9 twist Shilen barrel shoots its best with 73 grain Berger boat tails.A 12 twist is usually the best for 55 grain bullets.

Mine prefers 62-64 gr.

Every barrel is different.
My Savage .223 1:9 really likes Nosler Varmageddon 62 grain for a hunting bullet. Mixed results with various 55s. The best 55 has been Frontier ( Hornady ) HP match and Hornady VMax. 62 is the heaviest I`ve shot so far. Really tempted to try a 69 grain.

17 deer with 64 gr Win SP. See no need to try anything else.

Might be more than the bullet weight going on, but if 69 grain shoots better, shoot that.

lots of factors besides twist rate, while 55 gr. is cheap and great for practice ammo, I like the heavier stuff.

I run an AR with a 1 in 7 twist, I seem to group 69 to 77s consistently better than 55s. Not a big difference, but I’d rather have best accuracy with serious use loads and mediocre accuracy with range/ plinking’ loads.

At what range were you shooting the 55 grain where you couldn't hit the broad side of a bulldozer? At the same 400-500 yards as the 69 grain? And is the rifle .223 or .223 Wylde? Also what type 55 grain ammo?

What were the wind conditions on the trip with the 55 grain? In my experience 55 grain is ok out to 300 yards, but is much more affected by wind past 300 yards than even 62+ grain bullets. I have a hard time hitting 2 moa steel targets at 400+ yards and a bit of wind with 55 grain bullets but can nail them most every time out to 700-800 yards with 68-77 grain bullets.
