I'm looking for a coach gun just because I want one- use would be bumming around the farm, informal clays and playing cowboy- anybody have opinions on them? How do they pattern?, are they worth paying more then the stoeger?

FRIEND!!! :D

I, too, am looking for a coach gun and have started a thread about the Stoeger coach gun. I'm VERY interested in all things "coach gun" and want to add one to my collection soon. I would prefer a hammerless model. Looks like Cimarron offers 1881 and 1883/1889 shotguns in that configuration. They also offer a model with exposed hammers as the 1878.

I too would love to learn of these and if they are worth the money over a Stoeger coach gun. I LOVE double barrel shotguns!!

Those are AyA #2s, made in Spain. No they aren't coach guns, but I suppose you could have someone cut the barrels. It WOULD be a shame, however, to take a $6,000 gun and chop the barrels off.............. ;)

I've been shooting cowboy action for over five years and I've never seen anyone shooting the Cimarron hammerless doubles. The 1878 is a Chinese reproduction of the Colt 1878 double; those shotguns have a very good reputation.

The Stoegers are pretty popular, in part because they are easy to find. If I were in the market for an out of the box coach gun I'd prefer to buy a Baikal; they are less expensive and many people consider them better made than the Stoeger. Unfortunately, the Baikal is on the import ban imposed on certain Russian firearms. You may be able to find a new or used one somewhere.

My competition shotgun is an SKB 100 hammerless double. It started out as a 26" hunting gun. I had the barrels shorted to 22 inches.

SKBs are great sleepers in the realm of value for $$ spent
Savage/Fox are decent - I own one - but I still wouldn't subject it to the use of sporting or cowboy action; it just isn't designed for it.

I've got a 300 dollar Remington Spartan AKA Baikal that's my woods bumming gun, favorite dove slayer, and home defense gun. I like it, Russian made, sturdy shotgun that shoots where I look. It's kinda ugly, but I can't complain on how it works for me. To get the Spartan, you'd have to get used, but I THINK Baikals are still offered, can't say as I've kept up with it, though.

Something I found while woods bumming with the Spartan and 3 buck in one barrel.

Those Cimarron coach guns are made in China. They used to be sold under the TTN name.

Not all of the Cimarron shotguns are from China. The 1878 is.

The 1881 is apparently a Turkish import. I believe it was written up in the Cowboy Chronicle publication about a year ago.

Someone on the SASS Wire said that the 1889 double is made in Pakistan. There is a well regarded cowboy gunsmith whose alias is "Johnny Meadows" who sells cowboy guns with the action work already performed (I have two friends who purchased Baikal shotguns from Johnny and they are pleased with them.

Here is a link to a Gunbroker auction of one of the 1889 shotguns: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=497889012 If you click on "seller's other auctions" you will also see a Baikal, a TTN and a couple of Stoeger coach guns.

It appears that the Cimarron 1889 is a "clone" of the SKB 100/200 that is very popular with SASS shooters.

I just wish we could get a newly made, roughly $600 side by side coach gun that isn't at least to some extent a piece of junk.

Time and time again I've steered clear from these guns because in all my research, they are all built cheap and are prone to all kinds of malfunctions. This is from all the popular brands: Stoeger, Baikal, etc. etc.

My Baikal made Spartan must be junk. I've had NO issues with it in 8 years of ownership through 8 dove seasons. No, I don't shoot skeet with it. I'm sure I could break it with an unlimited ammo budget, a steel shoulder, and the will to do so.

I'm sure oneonceload can point, and has, to a super durable double but it isn't going to be cheap and you'll need to chop the barrels is you want it short.

It seems the cowboy guys think the Baikal are the most durable of the cheap coach shotguns. Well under $600

They did offer one around $600 that has removable chokes and functional hammers too.

Those ones I posted pics of are Spanish-made from the firm of AyA. They copied the Holland and Holland to such perfection, that most Brits who can't afford the real one, buy these at a fraction of the English guns with the same exquisite handling. These are fine upland hunting guns and bird shooting guns, not the kind you throw in the back of the pickup with a load of gravel as you drive down a bumpy road. ;)

I agree that we need some good midpriced guns, rifles as well as shotguns.

The Stoeger and the Baikal are relatively inexpensive; before the import ban you could pick up a Baikal brand new for about $300 (the basic coach gun with internal hammers). The Stoegers have their fans and detractors but there are lots of them in use.

I think the Baikals are pretty solid. Like the Stoeger, they are stiff out of the box but they can be slicked up pretty easily.

I went ahead and splurged on an SKB. It wasn't cheap but it's a great handling gun.

If you are not into competition and do not want to go over $600, I would find an old Stevens 311 and chop it to the length I want, keeping it legal of course. The Savage/Fox side by side is basically a dressed up 311. Good solid reliable American made shotguns.

I shoot cowboy action competition and presently own two SKBs, a Browning BSS, and a TTN hammered double. All have been tuned for competition, all have short barrels. The TTN has the factory full chokes, the others are chopped back to cylinder bores. I prefer the open chokes for competition.

I see guys at every match struggling with Baikals and Stoegers. They don't appeal to me.
