My CMP Greek Field Grade M1 Garand showed up this morning!I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the condition, as well as thier processing time.I just ordered it right before Christmas. The stock is dingy and has lots of light surface scuffs, but other than that, I'm amazed. No gouges, deep scratches etc.Bluing is fairly worn, but again, no gouges or deep scratches.A quick, light sanding and some de-greasing and the stock should look like brand new again.I couldn't be happier with it.Again, I was pretty worried about what the condition would be (I had wanted a Service grade, but missed the boat on those :(), but for the price, this thing looks great, and with a little cleaning, light sanding and rebluing, it will quickly be restored its original beauty and glory. My desktop pc is down at the moment, so I can't post pics, but I will add them in to ths post as soon as possible, for those interested in the current condition of CMP M1's, and for those who just love to look at them any chance they can, like me.Oh did I mention :) :D :what: :) :D :D :D :D :D ?

It's not all that tough to meet them. You're in CT, that's shall-issue, right? Get your concealed permit, join one of the affiliated clubs, (Garand Collectors Association, VCDL, any number of others, some of them can be joined online.) be at least 18 (or maybe 21), and a US citizen. I think that covers all the requirements. (Though I might have forgotten one)

really? i thought you had to compete in rifle events? I looked at teh event list and the closest one was 3+ hours away. I meet all the other requirements.

Added pics.Sorry about the quality of the close-ups.My camera doesn't seem to do well wit them.
shaggycat-Bore looks pretty good as best I can tell.I dont have a bore light, and wont have time to disasemble it until thursday, but from what I can see, it looks good. Also did the old bullet-in-the-muzzle test, and one of my surplus m2 ball rounds goes just past the 1/2 way point or so, which would seem to be about right (in my limited knowledge and experiance). Also, forgot to mention, the serial number is 5,461,xxx which apparently puts it around 1954or more likely, 1955.It's a Greek issue Sprinfield Armory, in case I forgot that info too.I'm so happy, I could poop!!:D :D

Also, had a question for those who may know better. The front handguard does not completely enclose the barrell and gas tube. The bottem is open about 1" wide, so the gas tube is visible. The edges of the handguard are rounded, so it doen't look like a modification or "hack-job".Is this normal? I cant say I've ever noticed this in any Garand pics I've seen, but that area is not usually of inerest, and thus not visible in pics, so maybe I just never noticed or saw it.Just curious.Heres a pic of what I'm talking about, in case it wasnt clear.

Congratulations! I can't wait to order one for myself. Need to start saving up.

Yes, it's normal.

Last week a buddy fired his CMP Garand for the first time, and was quite happy. He had been able to go to the arsenal at Anniston and pick his rifle from the racks, using one of their bore wear gages. :what:

He said they have a large supply of M1 Carbines they will soon offer...:D

Very nice! That stock looks like it has some beautiful character in it. Are you going to clean the stock up at all or just wipe it down and call it good?

The front handguard does not completely enclose the barrel and gas tube. The bottom is open about 1" wide, so the gas tube is visible.
That's actually the oprod. The gas tube is just the short little thing under the barrel and ends right at the front handguard. Yea, I thought that was odd the first time I got to handle and examine my first Garand too. Garand probably designed it that way because the oprod isn't straight, so it gives it a lot of free room.

Thanks for the info.I figured it was made that way, but had never seen it before, so I was a bit confused. As far as the stock, since its a high serial number, post WWII, Greek issue, I figure it has no particular historic or monetary value , and will likely clean up the stock and metal real good and reblue and refinish the stock wit BLO and tung oil (so it will still have a "True", original finish), as I figure it wont be hurting value (not like I'd ever sell it anyway) or historic significance, and it would be nice to have it restored to its original , and well deserved, beauty.

Let us know how it cleans up and shoots. I've been interested in picking one up also but I was a bit scared off by the description on the CMP website. If all works out well for you, perhaps I'll pull the trigger on it.

I picked up a field grade from CMP last fall. I was able to do 4" on a bad day. My Dad shot his recently (FG also) and shot about 2 to 2.5". His had the attachment for the grenade launching site also. Some field grade rifles have nice barrels, many don't. I expect to try mine again soon.

If it is a concern, when I was there, they had replacement barrels for $165.

Yeah, I'm certainly not expecting this to be terribly accurate due to barell wear, but thats fine.I'm not exactly a champion marksman anyway, and I never had any intention of this being a target or hunting gun.I got it for the history and looks of it, and just to have a semi-auto 30-06 to plink and informal, fun paper-punching and noise making. If I can keep it anywhere in the black at 100 yds, I'm perfectly happy with it.Anyway, I can always get a better barell for it if I need more accuracy for some reason, but I strongly suspect it will be fine for my purposes. If it ever stops raining here (probably around march :)) I'll let everyone know how it shoots.

Hello neighbor! I just noticed your location. I live in Springfield, work in Eugene. That is a nice looking rifle. I have been wanting to get one for quite some time and have been planning on shooting in a match at the gun club (Emerald Empire), just putting it off. Now that I know a CHL will do, I just printed out the order form and will have one ordered by the end of the week! I'm kicking myself for missing out on the service grade, but it sounds like the field grade will work fine from the description of yours. I've even convinced my wife this evening that I need to get one while they're still available.
Congrats on the new rifle! I hope to have one myself real soon.

jrfoxx - When did the CMP get your order? I placed an order for a field grade also (mid-December) and it is still open. It was just before they stopped accepting orders for field grades. From what I understand, CMP does a good job of prioritizing the orders - in other words first come, first served but I'm hearing of folks putting orders in and getting their M1s right away and mine seems to be on hold.

20yearvet-I put my order in like the week before Christmas if I remeber corectly (give or take a few days, at least).About a week later, they were having trouble getting my bank to allow the card number I gave them to go thru, and were very good about contacting me and working it out. When they got the card to go thru, they told me the gun would ship that day, or the next.A week later, it still showed "pending/open" when I'd look at my order online, so I called and found out that they had put it on hold, as my american Legion card expired the day after they got thier money. They didnt contact me in ANY way to tell me about it like they did with the money issue, and the website said nothing about a problem either.I only found out when I called. You may want to give them a call just to have them check and make sure there isn't a problem of some sort, as apparently, they dont always pro-actively contact people to tell them if there is.I would certainly give them a call, it definitely wont hurt anything, and it may help you out.

That looks great! Sounds like a deal. I am trying to squirrel away money for one and definately want it to be a shooter.

You will be surprised just how accurate the M1 is. I never fired a 30.06 in my life before this first attempt at 100 yards. I then went on to hit every 200 yard cow bell on the 200 yard range. By Jove, I thought I was an excellent shot till I allowed others on the range to fire it...they too, hit everything they shot at. The M1 is the finest rifle I ever shot! BTW, the reason this target reflects the vertical string is because I just reassembled it after a cleaning. Once the barrel reseated itself, I placed all remaining rounds dead center the rest of the day. Garands Forever!!!!!!

I am currently in the painful waiting stages for my american FG M1....It hurts so bad! I was considering changing to a greek return but we will see. I have 90 more days according to customer service. Had the idea to buy another, a greek, and refinish with duracoat and an evil black stock for field use...don't know that I could bubba even a Greek return.
