I have a CoAx and looking to pull some 45 Colt rounds where I used a MBC coated-lead bullet. I have no experience pulling rounds before and am not interested in the kinetic/inertia pullers. I much prefer the collet-style even though it is more expensive.

Forster makes a Universal bullet puller for use with its CoAx press. I'd buy it and a .45 collet. Can anyone share their experience using the CoAx Universal puller?

Looks similar to the RCBS & Hornady Puller. I changed about a Year ago from Inertia to a Collet Puller, Absolutely better, haven't used the Hammer since.

Get one, you'll love it.

One inherent weakness of the Co-Ax is the inability to use common collet bullet pullers with it due to the placement of the handle linkage. While my personal favorite puller is the Hornady Cam-Loc, neither it nor the more common RCBS will clear the Co-Ax handle.

The Forster Universal is just a RCBS/CH4D style puller with the handle removed to clear the linkage. I'd recommend using it with a Box Wrench and going "lightly" when snugging it

When initially setting the depth of the collet, it is easy to feel where the bullet meets the case? Does going lightly when snugging it help to preserve the bullet or does it serve another function?

Helps save the bullet once you get a feel for it you can pull them almost without a mark.

I think it took me 3 pulls, to get the feel for everything, now pulls are flawless, Great Tool, beatts the hammer any day.

Good Luck

It saves deforming the bullet and is more efficient and faster than over cranking the collet.

I love the idea and would really love to get one. Seems like a little too big of an expense to cover all calibers. How many collets will I need to buy? Traditional hammer pulled costs sixteen bucks and I can get it at academy without any shipping costs and will pull almost any bullet out there. Will have to save some money before going route of universal bullet puller.

Yes, you can feel the case mouth touch the collet easy enough. It goes into the mouth of the collet quite lightly but stops positively on the case mouth. I am sure you will like using it. When you have to pull more than a 1/2 dozen bullets or so, you will be glad you have one because it really does speed up the process.

I have had the Hornady unit for several years and pulled lots of bullets with it. Collets are generally reasonably priced.

I have a Co-Ax press. I didn't have good luck with theirs. I use the Hornady brand. I tried it on the Co-Ax and it works sort of. It clears the Yoke, but the top lever and the Yoke are too close to make it work nicely. I have a second press anyhow so I pull using it.

I use the Co-Ax press & Forster's collet bullet puller, work great for me...life is good!

The video produced by Forster makes it look easy with the 223 as it has a long profile. Have you folks found it more difficult to latch onto the bullet with pistol rounds? In those instances, particularly with a SWC profile like with the 45 Colt I will be pulling, I would imagine the collett has a limited space to grab the bullet cleanly.

The collet needs about 1/8" of flat to grab onto. I was able to pull some plated swc 357 that had enough bullet sticking out with minimal damage. But if the wide part of the swc is flush with case impact puller is the only way I know.

Yes, what he said.

If the collet cannot grab the bullet just below the ogive, the impact puller is your only resort. The collet can't grab onto what's not there.
