College students with CCW or those not allowed to carry at work.

Places you can't carry: Schools, school property, Federal buildings, hospitals, court houses, post offices and buildings that say employees can't carry. I have a Class A but unless I'm working, I can't carry. Really stinks...:( I'd NEVER leave a gun in the car -- that's Sean Penn stupid in my book, I'd also never carry it in my pursue. I'd be on me or at home.

I just leave it in my apt. We can carry on campus, but we can't go into any buildings.

Corporate policy forbids any guns on company property, including parking lots. As it is a company owned vehicle I drive, they have free access to it at all times. It belongs to them! Can't carry. Loads of good this CCW does me.

My company's policy restricts weapons of any kind. Not only on property but on person while on company time. See'n as I pass through some "interesting" areas in the Detroit area during work I would never break company policy, honest.

No written corporate weapons policy that I've found, in the building I work in. I have a feeling management probably wouldn't approve, because another company-owned site I go to occasionally has a psuedo-30.06 sign. I say "pseudo" because it doesn't conform to the law (lettering is too small, and it's only in English.) I take the position that what they don't know won't hurt them. Although, even if they did know, it still wouldn't hurt them. ;)

Jobs are easier to replace than lives.
Food, warmth, clothing and means of protection all cost money. Losing a job in some areas, and this economy can be a pretty catastophic event.

One can never pick the time and place when violence may strike, but sometimes one must weigh the odds of violence vs. the odds of losing their job. Everything in life is a gamble.

Once in a while circumstances will cause us to be UNDERarmed, but it's our mindset that keeps us from being UNARMED.

I'd like to have a gun with me at work but I instead I carry two knives.

When I'm out painting the town and wish I had my Benelli and friends with long guns, but can only have a pistol, spare mags and a knife.

It's easy for us to tell you to break policy and break the law but is it worth having your record follow you for the rest of your life? While I'm sure your conscience would bother you if someone stole YOUR gun from YOUR car and it became everybody's problem, if the Powers That Be were really concerned about that happening, they shouldn't be forcing you to leave it in your car instead of carrying it. I say, carry while you drive since it'll be nice to have it when you're getting gas or groceries on the way home. Leave it in the car when you're at class and work, tuck a serious combat knife away DISCREETLY and take as many classes as you can with it! It's seriously fun and you won't feel as underarmed.

Skunk - That's pretty much my current solution. Either of the following work wonderfully...(note they are not to scale with one another)

I carry my Benchmade with about a 4" blade on me now, though not exactly discreetly. It's not that I feel unsafe on campus, when I used to live directly across the street from school I'd take a cigar and walk the campus at any time of night I needed to get away. Our campus and town are fairly safe. I'll probably take the gun and leave it in the car when I can forsee having to run errands and such, but other wise leaving it at home since I live at most 3 minutes away. I have increasingly found myself wishing I had it at night when entering or leaving Walmart or Krogers though. Seems to be a lot more shady characters around lately. unfortunately I haven't got a safe way to carry until my holster comes in, which is only about a week and a half now. Man I can't wait to get it in, my Steyr will be sooo happy :D

First thing I did when I came to college was walk straight up to my Campus Police station and ask to speak to the chief. I politely as I knew how I told him that I reciently got my CWL, liked to keep up on my marksmanship, knew there were ranges in the area, and was wondering what options I had concerning keeping my pistols on campus. He told me that if I kept 'em locked in the trunk of my car and only took 'em out when I was leaving campus, that I'd be just fine. Found out later that I can even carry open on campus (haven't yet had the guts to do such, however).

I'm in a bit of a pickle with regards to the whole carrying at school thing. In November I'm going on a field trip in my Geology class. Its on a Saturday, so its not a school day. The site is not a State Park/public property, its a streambed on a section of private property. So, technically I should be able to carry, but to get there all 10 of us get to take the university van, which is, technically, university property. So even if I'm legal at the site, I don't think I'm legal going to the site. Then theres the fact that its a school trip anyway, although its not manditory.

I just hate to go out in the middle of nowhere with no protection. I already know from someone who went there earlier this year that he ran into some large dogs, so currently I'm playing the risk vs. gain game with myself.

Deep Blue

Deep Blue, I would drive myself in that situation. If you don't have a car but you have a friend in the class (or just a friend that wants to learn about geology) that knows you pack drive you. There is no sense being uncomfortable about being unarmed so get there yourself and be armed.

i live in GA and when i get my permit in i doubt ill be able to carry except when i go home from school and then go out
guns are verboten within 1000 ft of a school or university :)uhoh: )
unless you have it for a "lawful purpose"
now i could park off campus, the building i get schooled at is located in a very nice neighborhood and i could get a lock box for my car.......
however, after a few weeks of law school im convinced any prosecutor with a bone to pick could construe "lawful purpose" anyway he wanted too
any of GA students or citizens have an outlook on the GA laws pertaining to schools?

There is a BIG difference between a school dissalowing weapons and it being against the law. This varies greatly from state to state so check your rules to be sure. But, in Washington it is NOT illeagal to carry on a college campus and there is no legally binding signage provision. ("no weapons signs" only reflect the desire of the property owner but are not legally enforeable). Of course the policies of virtually every institution that i am familier with forbids the carry of weapons.

What this amounts to is that if im caught carrying a weapon against the policy of my university the worse that can happen to me is expulsion. And while that is pretty bad its a lot better than commiting an actual crime. And its a risk i am willing to take.

OR legalese

Im going to be applying for my CHL soon and just went over the counties FAQ (Washington County, Oregon) and it had this to say:

Oregon Law states: Possession of a Concealed Handgun License does not authorize you to carry a firearm on any of the following properties: Any Federal facility. (i.e. Federal Court House, Post Office, Social Security Office, in airports, and on airplanes). This does not prohibit the carrying of firearms on federal lands, other than designated wilderness areas, incident to hunting or other lawful purposes. National Forests marked or posted by signs prohibiting all firearms. You may not carry a firearm concealed while upon an Indian Reservation/Indian property without the written permission of the tribal judge. This may also apply to certain casinos that are on the Indian lands. In a courtroom, jury room, judge’s chambers or the areas adjacent thereto that the presiding judge determines should be free of firearms to ensure the safety of the litigants, court personnel, witnesses and others. Any private business or private facility where a condition of being on the premises or facility is that you not possess a firearm. If you are apprehended with a gun on any of these premises, your concealed handgun license will be seized and revoked.

In short you can carry anywhere but a federally controlled building or piece of land and Indian Reservations are there own jurisdictions. If you have a CHL you can carry at school, you can carry at your childe's school and you can carry at work. The ONLY legal way to stop you(as i have been led to understand) is by posting clearly that no one is allowed to carry a firearm on the premises. I know this is an issue just waiting to be enforced as many companies in Oregon (Including a number of 24 hour convenience stores !!!!) prohibit employees from carying weapons yet do not post signs prohibiting customers from carrying.

It would probably be worth your while to look up the statutes in your own state, your employer may be violating state law and simply not know it. One of my previouse employers was unaware that the restriction was illegal, they employee handbook was created from a sort of template and it hadnt occured to managment to have the thing checked out.

Oh, this is my first post to the board; Hi Everyone!

In regards to me--I went to school in NJ an NY and CCW wasnt honored and all the jobs I have had didnt allow me to carry.

That said--I carried almost every day of my collegiate career and every day of work. I use ankle holster, pocket holster and IWB rig.

All the years of school and working--5 in college and 8 working--I have only let one person know--my best friend and roomie in college.

Plus also carry 2 knives, baton, and pepper spray.

I'm one of those unfortunate individuals that attends Virginia Commonwealth University. As another poster pointed out, VCU is mentioned specifically in the Virginia statutes, so no way of getting around that. So I'm stuck carrying a small knife with a 3 in. or less blade.

i can't carry yet because i'm not 21, but when i turn 21 you better believe i will. On campus last week there were 3 armed robberies. Muggings are a fact of life. There are no laws prohibiting from carrying on college campuses, however, the college does have its own policies, which are not favorable to self defence. I currently carry fox labs pepper spray and and would be in trouble if i was caught with it. My defence? I work in the surrounding meighborhoods as an EMT--They can go into a crackhouse for an overdose without pepper spray! I wear body armor at work for heavens sake! I am currently founding a student rifle and pistol club as well as a student run commission on public safety. We plan to get rape prevention groups to protest on campus against these pro-rape, pro-mugging, pro-crime policies.

Interesting idea... There is a large campaign right now by the rape prevention groups, at least in my part of Texas. Flyers and ads everywhere as well as commercial. Unfortunately it's law here, not just campus policy, so I have a feeling our battle would be a bit harder, especially since we can't seem to keep the Democrats in the capital whenever a peice of legislation arises that they don't like. An organization who's goal is rape prevention may get a lot of people listening who otherwise wouldn't seeing as most everyone is against rape...

I, too work in a rural manufacturing facility, which is part of an international non-gun friendly corporation.
Can't keep weapons in vehicles, can't even have knives unless you have a certain job classification. (Hazard suit, fall protection harness, freezer operator (-45 degrees), etc.)
I carry a big knife on the way in and a smaller knife with a small built-in flashlight while at work.
Job is rural, I drive 4 miles one way, and my times at risk are 10:00 PM and 6:30 am.
Don't really need to carry unless I have errands to run.

Heheh.. here at Oregon State, the mere thought of carrying a gun on campus gets you arrested. We have a pistol/rifle team, but you have to go across town to their little range; and AFAIK there is no storage space there. So I'm stuck with my knife for the moment (heck, it's probably illegal too.. they just haven't seen it yet.. ).

The fact that we have a nuclear reactor here on campus doesn't help things, because of all the terrorism BS.

Doesn't mean I won't follow the "keep your mouth shut" rule about things when I get my CCW. :scrutiny:
