Hope I am doing this right.....new guy here. I am looking to find out info on a 1911 I have. It is a Colt serial beginning with SFLDA.... it's the shiny blue "classic 45". Colt did not have any info. It's a series 80. It is my understanding its Colt and Springfield parts from the factory(both receiver and upper are Colt). I want to do some mods but want more info.

You could call Colt customer service and they may be able to tell you what you want to know, based on the serial number.

Hi Nate, welcome to the forum! That is a very unusual ser.# prefix if you ask me. Now I'm NOT a 1911 collector but that's such an unusual serial number prefix, I'd be hesitant to rework the pistol until I've found out the scooby on the prefix and year of manufacture, who it was made for, etc. Who knows? You may have a limited run of a special contract received by Colt back then, and it may be worth quite a bit. Much more than fair market value of the pistol with more a common serial number.

Hmmmmm...... Serial number prefix SFLDA.... South Florida District Attorney? Well, obviously not, but you can see where I'm coming from. Quite often really odd serial number prefix's may(I stress may) be indicative of a special contract run, implying low production, implying a possible desirable collectible firearm and one high value.

I hope I'm not steering you wrong. I'm more of a collector than a shooter so naturally that rang my bell.

Maybe there's a 1911 collector out there than can shed more light on the subject.

Yea, I think it is some kind of limited run.....I got from a guy when i was in the Army for much less than it's worth I'm sure. I contacted Colt and they told me that didn't have any info. It has been shot a little, it already was when I got it. Highly accurate. Thanks for any info. I think the pics are attached.

Beautiful gun Nate! Now I'm no expert in colts, or modern arms for that matter, but it appears to have an extended slide(very uncommon,ie rare, imo), and gold engraving??? I suggest it may be a limited collectors edition(VERY RARE).

If this were mine, I'd just hang on to it until I could specifically identify it. I'd call the Colt archive people:

http://www.coltsmfg.com/archive.aspx

Please don't modify it. I have a feeling you may be able to sell this, and go buy 2 or 3(or 5 or 6 for that matter) brand new standard 1911's for what you get for it.

Take with this a grain of salt. Like I said I'm no expert in modern collectible pistols, but to me this is to unusual of a gun to treat it as a mainstream pistol. Which means $$$$$$$$$$$ to you.

Finally, don't be in a hurry to sell it, or ESPECIALLY modify it, until you know exactly what you've got, and have had a collectibles expert give you a value estimate. If you want to talk further about this, feel free to PM me, ok?

Lew Horton

I thought I had seen one of these before. This is from the "boys" at m1911.org

Met my bud, Larry, at our favorite shop today and I purchased a Lew Horton commissioned "Classic 45" special edition...a run of 500 in '95.

It is in Royal Blue....the polishing and deep blue is flawless to my eye.

Box and paperwork, but sadly, no outer sleeve.

Here is a pic of the Custom Shops fine work........

Looks like it was the work of the Colt Custom shop. I would keep it as it is.
