I just acquired my first 1911-type handgun. I swapped my 2nd generation Glock 17 (with 2 mags box and cheap holster) for the Colt with two mags, holster and no box. Both guns have some wear on the edges. The Colt has a 300 round count and the Glock is at about 2000.

I was looking to trade for a revolver, but I've always wanted a 1911, so it was a bit of an impulse trade, so how did I do?

You got a good one. The Colt Compact was my first 1911 and also my first firearm (16th birthday). They are great guns and excellent CCW pieces. It will serve you well.

Pretty decent little pistols, and not as many had the issues accociated with some of the chopped slide variants. One caveat. The recoil system has a weak point. The little rectangular tab that you see at the bottom of the dust cover/spring tunnel is prone to shearing. If Brownells still carries them in the Colt Factory Parts catalog...go ahead and order a spare if you plan on shooting it a lot.

The last one that I ordered was 25 bucks, but that's been a while back, and I get the discount. Keep a close eye on it, and replace it if there's any sign that it's headed south. My standing advice has been to use one to shoot the gun with, and swap it out with the new one for carry. They don't give any warning that they're about to let go...and when they do, they spit the recoil springs downrange along with the plug... and I don't think the OEM recoil springs are available any more. You may be able to find one in the aftermarket, but most have moved to the single spring system...which may give some problems in some guns.

Luck!

If Brownells does not carry the part, or if you want something stronger, Clark Custom carries a reverse recoil plug for the Officer's Model and Compact. Twenty bucks. It's a permanent solution.

More about it here.

Good gun. Whether it's a good trade depends on how it shoots. Accurate and reliable? You did good. No? Not so good. As long as a kitchen table gunsmith did not jack with it, chances are you are golden.

Thanks for the responses.

It is completely stock, so that's good. I guess I'll find out for sure when I shoot it.

Xavier, you mods seem like a great way to go. Again, I'll decide how to proceed after I put some rounds down range.

Thanks again.
