Just picked it up... must have been stored upright in a closet, barrel-up, because there were deposits of dust in these little nooks and crannies around the carry handle and front sight tower. Cleaned those up with cotton swabs and Hoppes#9. Then wiped everything down with a felt cloth spritzed lightly with CLP. CLP'd the internals and ran patches thru the barrel. Dry-cycled some dummy .223 rounds.
Taking her to the range tomorrow.
Serial#check on the Internet shows a manufacture date of 1974.
As I left the gun store, I got all sorts of compliments, pats on the back and high-fives from the other shop patrons...

I'm taking her shooting tomorrow...

Enjoy it. My brother got his last weekend in Columbus, Ohio finally. The seller settled for $1,200 and it was minty and a 1971. Congratulations again and enjoy a classic rifle.

Well, I shot it yesterday. Worked pretty well, although I think I need to adjust the sights - I think it's zeroed for 200 yards, since I was hitting or getting very close to manhole covers and other bits of scrap steel set out on the berm, while I had very little idea where I was putting rounds on paper at 100 yards.
Unfortunately, at this particular range you are only allowed to load one round at a time. I politely asked for a "brief exception" and loaded and shot five at the beginning of my range session - the rifle fired all five flawlessly.

I bought mine in the late '70's brand new for less than $300. Never any problems with it and can still do accurate work with it out to 100 yards with the iron sights. Does very well with Black Hills 55 grain Blue Box.

I've been looking for a SP1 for years, but everyone that I find has a price tag of $1500.00 or so.

I'm of the opinion that they are worth between $800.00 and $1000.00 depending on condition.

What do you guys think?

Currently, at least around here in Ohio, $1,500 is the going rate. My brother lucked into a nice clean one for $1,200. I figure any given gun is worth what someone who wants it is willing to pay for it. The demand driving the price.

I lucked out big-time, then, paying $850 for mine. I'm hoping to get it to a range with a decent distance that doesn't have silly rules about loading one round at a time...

Yes, you did very well with that price. Now, please post some pictures of your SP-1, won't you? :D

I've seen SP1 lower receivers sell for that price. The going value for those can reach or exceed a couple grand. These are valued for their historic value, not for shooting. Try buying an original Armalite. =o)
