I have a Colt Cobra with the aluminum frame. Have had it for years. It is an old one, the style with the round barrel before the ramped barrel version. It has always performed well and I am comfortable with it using medium 38 spl. loads. My problem is that the FFL I bought it from painted it with Brownell's black, bake on paint. It's really ugly. I need advise on how to strip it and what kind of finish to use. Don't want to mess up the aluminum frame.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks,

The frame was anodized - a special process used on aluminum. To re-anodize it you would have to first remove all of the steel parts, including the barrel and studs that the hammer and trigger pivot on. This might be possible, but expensive and a job for the Colt factory. Once the job was completed the finish would soon start wearing again.

An alternative would be a painted finish, such as Brownells' Alumahide (not sure of spelling ) which is sparyed on. You might or might not like it, but something along this line is the only practical solution I can think of.

Electroless nickel or chrome is another choice, but again expensive.

That looks like a decorative anodizing rather than hard anodizing. The example I found is a nice color.

Electroless nickel on aluminum requires more and costly steps.
