Does anyone know where I could have an old detective special worked on?

My grampa had me look at it. I took it by a large local gun store that also offers gun smithing but to no avail.

Cylinder & Slide used to be one of the go-tos for older Colt revolvers, at least a few years ago. Frank Glenn is oft-recommended on the Colt Forum for older pythons and other colt revolvers.

Maybe give them a call.

I had Frank work on the DS for me. Long story short, it was all levels of broken and he got it up and running for me.

What's it need?
This. Old revos tend to have old oil. It may just need a really good cleaning.
Now, that said, detail stripping isn't for noobies. Perhaps remove the grips, give it a good soaking in kerosene, and blow it out with compressed air. Now, does it carry up, and lock properly?
Old Dick Specials are cool, and this one has been in the family.
Keep us posted.

I can't recall everything they said it needs unfortunately. It isn't safe to shoot currently, it is definitely out of time and has issues with lock up.

I don't recall shooting it since maybe 2006, so grandpa must have kept shooting it here and there. He's 85 and still living out on his acres. We did some shooting the summer of 2021. I'll treasure that. I got to shoot with him. He said it was no fun because I hit everything and it's hardly fair. I hope I shoot as well as him when I'm at that age. I got to teach my 21 year old cousin how to shoot a pistol. She never fired a gun before. She was deadly with my ruger wrangler by days end.

I won't give up getting the old colt up and running. Even if she can only handle lrn and wadcutters, that would work for me.

Hopefully I find somewhere/ someone, and I can afford it and it isn't a crazy long process. He's in good health, grandpa, but I'd like to get it fixed and shoot it together once more.

He told me 20+ years ago that life is a lot like the shooting range. Don't take your eye off your target, and you'll hit your goal.

I'll reach out to cylinder and slide. Thanks guys.

I'm in central IL if you know of any gunsmiths that can handle old colts and have the parts and experience.

The Colt forum members strongly recommend Frank Glenn, linked above.

He's a true Master pistolsmith and does all Colt work to factory standards, techniques, and specs.
He has excellent pricing and a fast turnaround.
He's done a good bit of work for forum members, always to top reviews.

Reached out to Mr Glenn! I will update this topic if you guys are interested.

Hmm, email from the site got kicked back:

I sent Mr. Glenn an email the night before last and yesterday I got a response. He gave me instructions for shipping my gun to him and a copy of his FFL. I told him what I wanted done and he said he should be able to take care of it for me. His email is under “CONTACT” on his website.
This morning I packed up my Colt DS and took it to my LGS and my gun is on its way to Frank Glenn. I am really excited about this.

Thank you @Miami_JBT regarding your post where you said you had work done by Mr. Glenn last year. I truly thought he had retired.

I did too. Most of the colt smiths that were ever worth mentioning are gone. Those guns were hand tuned and todays lot of part swapper “gunsmiths” can’t make an old colt even close to what it once was. It’s nice to know that there are still options.

I generally turn to the American Pistolsmiths Guild for such things. Their website has a searchable database that is pretty easy to use, and anyone on that list is pretty much guaranteed to be a top notch gunsmith. The website appears to be down at the moment, so I won't provide a link, but if Mr. Glenn fails to pan out then that would be my next step.

Could it be because they have been merged with the American Custom Gunmakers Guild?
I stumbled onto this while searching for the pistolsmiths guild you mentioned.

EDIT: I forgot to add this link.

you take photos of the DS before you mailed it out. good for prosperity and history the gun

Actually, no. I should have. I have some older photos that should suffice should I need to use the insurance I put on the gun.
That would really tick me off.

Frank does good work and got a junked DS back to working as a cannibalized hodgepodge of a Gen 2 DS frame with a Gen 3 crane and cylinder.

Glad you'll get yours up and running.

Thank you. I got some good news today.
Mr. Glenn called and he told me my gun was fine. He said lock up was great, everything looked and felt normal. He was curious as to why I sent it to him. I explained to him that when I got that Colt the trigger pull was mushy and that I had a new mainspring installed but the gun seemed to have been slicked up a bit. I wanted the internal parts looked at to be sure they hadn’t been modified.
He emailed me to let me know my gun looked great internally he cleaned and lubed it and it was ready to ship. The fees are very reasonable. I’ll be mailing him a check in the morning.
Here I have been babying that gun for fear of damaging it and my fears have been for no reason.
I can’t wait to get it back.

That’s great, Pat. If Frank says it’s good, it’s good. I’ve hired him to work on three Colts and he’s always done a superb job at very reasonable rates with a fast turn around. I’m actually hesitant to endorse him for fear that the secret will get out and his rates and wait times will go through the roof. Wait, take back everything I said, he’s terrible! Don’t waste your money! :)
