Turning back the clock, for a number of years, Colt rifles for the mass market had a number of "non-standard" features, including odd size pins to hold the upper and lower together, a steel insert in the lower to prevent installation of "evil" parts, and no bayonet lug or threaded muzzle; they did some of this in a vain effort to not only comply with, but to go beyond the Clinton AWB ban and placate the "antis."
Didn't Colt originally assign the "LE" designation to distinguish normal-featured AR-pattern rifles from the oddball ones meant for the mass market?
This is now moot, since the Federal AWB expired years ago and no longer applies. (Some state & local restrictions still are on the books.)
