What are the legal issues surrounding this conversion? I know about all the paper work needed to buy a class 3 weapon (BATFand CLEO) but was wondering if the parts were available if it would be a more cost friendly way of going about it.

Im new to the class 3 world so was just looking for some input from people who have more experience with them

machine gun registry was closed in 1986. Can't register new machine guns or use unregistered sears for creation of (effectively) new machine guns. You have to get an already-registered machine gun or sear. I'm not too up on current NFA prices, but I'd expect to pay at least $5000+ for an autosear, or $10,000+ for a registered lower receiver or complete rifle.

Yep. You CAN NOT make a machine gun from a semi auto, unless you want to go jail that is.

Yes, the parts are available, but the costs are relatively undesirable. Geoff is referring to the NFA registry of full auto guns and sears, but that is a very expensive route.

But don't fret, I believe you can still legally make that machine gun you want.

The only other route would be to become a class 3 manufacturer licensee. That route is also spendy, but IIRC, you'd be able to build/convert rifles, pistols, etc. at will. However, this isn't a license the ATF will simply hand you, just because you want to play with full auto. You'd have to be in a serious business venture to acquire the 07/02 FFL, be able to pass the investigation the ATF would do, and be willing to spend all that cash. You'd likely spend just as much as the cheapest FA M16 around, but hey, you'd now be in the firearms business! You could build machine guns, convert semi-autos, and do a mag-dump every afternoon just for the heck of it! Well... I guess for the profit in it actually. The MGs you build could only be sold to law enforcement or possibly military, but could never enter the private market because, like mentioned, that registry is closed.

I think you get the point though.:)

Yea i guessed as much. I didnt think the ATF would take kindly to people turning the guns to full auto even if you did do it the right way... guess ill have to wait till my next trip to thailand for some full auto fun lol

If there was a cost friendly method, someone would have discovered it in the past 23 years.

There's always lottery tickets!

But if shooting full auto is all you're looking to do, as opposed to owning one, there should be someone, somewhere near you, willing to rent their guns.

If anyone in the DFW area wants to shoot an MP5, as long as you provide or pay for the ammo, I have no problem with it.

You cant convert one unless you buy a Registered Drop in Auto Sear, a Registered lightning link or buy a pre FOPA M16 lower

^^^ All of which are expensive, due to the artficial scarcity created by closing the registry.
